My epic movie, the 12 minute long video I put on my blog on Wednesday, has caused a bit of a hullamooloolaba around here. If you haven’t watched it yet, and you do have those precious 12 minutes to spare, I suggest you head over and see it.

I’m sure you’ll agree that the tension in the film builds like a Hitchcockian classic.
But for those who like to get straight to the point, I’ve made a shorter version. This one is just 5 minutes long. It’s kind of like a highlights show, complete with expert analysis. (Ahem, by me.) So even if you have already watched the long version, it’s still worth watching this short version aswell.

What have we learnt from this?
- BobinOz is not a snake catcher, more of a snake relocator.
- This snake, as with most snakes, didn’t want me to even see him, let alone engage with me.
- The snake only became aggressive when I ‘attacked it’, but it only wanted to defend itself.
- His eyesight wasn’t good, when he saw the great outdoors he didn’t go for it.
- Fact: The Green Tree Snake, which I think this was, is the Australian snake most likely to enter your home.
- This is good news, because the Green Tree Snake is totally harmless. It’s non-venomous and can’t even give you a significant bite.
What we didn’t learn and should have.
If you don’t know what you’re doing (I don’t) and a snake enters your house, close all the doors to secure it in that room, then call a snake catcher. So why didn’t I do that? Here’s why…
Know the wildlife.
For me, this is all about identification. Australia has many creatures and creepy crawlies, some can hurt you, many can’t. Anyone thinking of coming to live here should take the time to learn about the wildlife, because it is important to know what to be scared of and what not to be scared of. As they say, knowledge is power.
After I’d seen the snake and especially after I’ve taken a photograph of him and zoomed in, I was 95% certain this was a harmless Green Tree Snake. So I was confident enough to show him out the door and let him go on his way. After all, this poor little blighter had just had his home destroyed.
Just look at his poor little scared face……
Your braver than me i would have run for the hills. Harmless or not.
I quite enjoyed it, but I do feel I need to brush up on my snake catching skills a bit, it was all a bit messy.
Your lucky you don’t live in India or Sri Lanka Bob… Chances are it would have been some nasty snake!
I would not have messed with a snake in either of those countries, there antivenom availability is rather limited. I would have ran.

Thank you, I like to be amusing if I can. As for the wife, yes, she was out. And Elizabeth was at school, so it was just me and the dog. I locked him in the office. He would have wanted to play with it.
Good work Bob and great video. It’s a good example of how its important to know your snakes. It might have been a different story had it been venemous. You should have said ‘No snake was harmed during the making of this film’ at the end…’Only a tree’.
Oh, it would have been a much different story had the snake been venomous, I can tell you. I would have been straight on the phone. Dang! I should have thought of that ending, mind you, the damage was done to the tree about a month or so ago during a vicious storm. It stood no chance.
