How to Get a Job As a Doctor in Australia

How to register to work as a doctor in Australia

australian-approved-doctorThis isn’t a question that I am qualified to answer, the process to become registered to work as a doctor in Australia is, from what I understand of it, very complex.

Just as with nurses, much depends on…

  • Your age.
  • Your qualifications and where you obtained them.
  • In some cases successful assessment of your skills.
  • Your ability to speak the English language.
  • And, no doubt, much more.

Who can work as a GP in Australia is governed by the Royal Australian College of GPs. They categorise GPs in to three groups. Category 1 and 2 doctors can generally get a job in Australia as a GP. Category 3 doctors (or those who can’t get categorised) will struggle to find work as there are sufficient Australian-trained doctors for those posts.

Category 1 doctors

Category 1 doctors are those with both a formal training certificate in Family Medicine plus membership of the appropriate Royal College (e.g. Royal College of GPs in the UK). Category 1 doctors most usually gained their qualifications from:

  • UK
  • Ireland
  • Canada
  • New Zealand
  • Singapore

Category 2 doctors

Category 2 doctors are those with one or other of the two above mentioned criteria for category 1 doctors. Category 2 doctors most usually gained their qualifications from:

  • Belgium
  • Denmark
  • Netherlands
  • Norway
  • South Africa
  • Sweden
  • USA

For the full details on these categorisations, please visit RACGP.

If you do not have a qualification from one of the above countries then you would need to apply to be recognised via the Standard Pathway through the AMC.

That’s all I know, and I’m sure you have many questions, like…

Doctors FAQFortunately I know where you can get those answers from, and all you need to do is click on that image and you will be taken to the FAQ page of the government’s website called DoctorConnect.

In fact, the government has two websites that you will find very useful:

How much will you get paid?

Typically, GPs earn around $240,000 in suburban areas. This can rise to $400,000 in more rural areas. You’ll be paid on a fee per service basis – that is each patient is charged for a doctor’s consultation. You get a percentage of this, varying from 50% to 65%, depending on employer and the region.

What is GP work in Australia like?

GP practice in Australia is very similar to the UK & Ireland in terms of clinical work. Practices are generally modern and have nursing support. Some have physiotherapy, pathology, ultrasound, CT and / or ECG too. Usually the practices have 6 to 10 doctors on site. Typically, they are open 12 hours a day, for 5 days per week and often weekends too. They can be situated as standalone premises or in shopping centres or next door to a pharmacy.

Hello there, I just finished with a MBBS degree from Melaka Manipal Medical College ( it’s a twin in program, 2.5 years in India and 2.5 years in Malaysia) I plan to sit for my AMC examination and continue with the clinical part thereafter. What are the odds of securing a supervised clinical practice for the provisional registration since I do not have any working experience currently and also, the chances of securing a job after that? Thank you

Further more my training has been accepted by the royal college of ORTHOPAEDIC surgeons of UK and am going to sit the FRCS exams soon. • Moh June 12, 2015, 11:16 am |

    Good day,
I have read some of the previous comments and replies. My condition is different from everyone here. I am a Australian citizen currently studying medicine in english language abroad in EU country, Romania. I’m in my 3rd year.

As I have learnt from speaking with my British class friends, that if any student graduating from Romania wants to move to UK, he/she will only be asked to do F2. F1 is not required because we are completing a 6 year course. This rule has been applied since 2012.

My question now is, as an Australian citizen how will I be considered in Australia? Can I apply directly after graduating? Or should I move to UK and do F2 and then apply to Australia as a GP? Will I be treated the same as my friend who will graduate from an Australian university? Should I get recommendation from my friend when applying?

Thanks for all of your effort for answering to everyone’s comments

    • Paul Brooks June 12, 2015, 6:25 pm |

      Hi

I can’t help you directly as I’m not familiar with the Australian system for newly qualified medics. I suggest you have a chat with the AMC and then also talk to one or two of the Royal Colleges in Australia and the ACRRM about your options.

I can say that you may find it difficult to come to the UK do F2. The GMC decides on registration for doctors based on both nationality and where you qualified. As a non-EU citizen, you may find that you can’t get registration in the UK because of this. You should check with them though: gmc-uk.org
      Regards

      Paul

I have been trained as GP in UK but have MRCGP INT, I donot have CCT. Am I eligible to get job as GP in Australia.

  • Joseph Simon May 19, 2015, 1:25 am |

Hi,I have read most of the comments ,and got the conclusion ,that Doctors who is not trained in UK,Ireland,Canada ,new zealand ,singapore etc, wont be able to find a job In Australia. So my question is,
1.Can i do the MBBS from 1st year again in Australia? Will my age be a problem? How can i get into the medical school?
2.Or can i do a masters degree in which my mbbs will be an addon for future work in Australia with that master degree i earn from Australia?
3 If so What masters degrees can you suggest me Sir?

    • Paul Brooks May 22, 2015, 6:46 pm |

      Hi

I can’t give you the answer to this. You might be best contacting the medical schools in Australia to see what they say are their entry requirements and nationality restrictions. Please be aware that as part of medical training you’d need to do an intern year, so you need to check you can do that in Australia as well, if you choose to go to one of their medical schools

  • Dr Kakkar May 18, 2015, 5:48 pm |

    Dear Paul

i have read about the already answered queries mentioned above, but still wanted to know if u could help.
I am a qualified and registered anaesthesiologist in India working in a govt medical college on a teaching post (teaching experience after post graduation= 6 yrs).
My husband is also a qualified ophthalmologist (anterior segment and refractive surgeon) working in pvt sector (work experience >6 yrs)
We wanted to shift our base to Australia. Is it possible to get jobs over there? either of us?

    • Paul Brooks May 18, 2015, 6:13 pm |

      Hi Dr Kakkar.

Sorry, but I don’t know if you would be able to get jobs. If you can, it is likely to be only through contacting hospitals in Australia directly – I’m pretty certain that no recruitment agency will be recruiting doctors directly from India to work in Australia. Be aware of any person or agency saying that, if you pay them a few, they can get you work. This is a scam

Your best bet is to come to the UK – we have jobs for both anaesthetists and ophthalmologists. You will need GMC registration though. More info here: http://www.gmc-uk.org. If you go ahead with this, let me know and send me your CVs to paul@euhealthstaff.eu

      Regards

      Paul

    Hello Paul,

My brother-in-law is a MBBS doctor in India and was recently approached by a person belonging to christian missionary about a GP position in Avenue Hospitals, Windsor. We were told that the approximate salary would be around AUS $15000 per month. Can we trust this person about the position and the salary? They are charging close to AUS $7000 for processing and taking care of the entire process. Can you please let me know what steps i need to take so that i can ensure that it is genuine?. My brother-in-law has worked close to 10 years in Indian hospitals and does not have any global exposure.

    • Paul Brooks May 13, 2015, 4:35 pm |

      Dear Vishnu
I think this is a scam. All legitimate doctor recruitment agencies do not charge candidates to find jobs for doctors. We get paid by the GP practice

      Regards

      Paul

  • Herler Cast May 12, 2015, 3:04 am |

    Hi Mr. Paul…
Greetings, Sir i had an enquiry, i have an MRCGP INT UK and MBBS done in India. I am currently in KSA and i fall under SPP 3 of the RACGP. I am currently in KSA and i have worked as a GP for 10 years. How can i get a job in Australia after passing the AKT and AMC verification ? Is the FICPI important ? And will AHPRA give me license after getting a job ? Thanks

    • Paul Brooks May 13, 2015, 4:39 pm |

      Hi
I think it will be very difficult to get a job in Australia via this route. You will need a training post and there are very few of them – and quite a lot of other doctors already in Australia looking for similar jobs. You could try googling ACRRM and see if that way might work

      Regards

      Paul

  • Sumit May 5, 2015, 1:51 am |

    Dear Paul,

My name is Sumit. I am a GP partner in UK with 8 years of experience. I wish to relocate to Australia. I have MRCGP via MAP. I understand that would put in tier 2 category.
I a not very keen on doing the Australian exam to attain fellowship.
I have gone through the ACRRM website and it seems they are still accepting MRCGP via MAP to attain the fellowship. I wanted to check if there is any possibility of moving yo Australia via this route.
    Would really appreciate your advice.

    Thanks

    Sumit

    • Paul Brooks May 7, 2015, 3:29 am |

      Hi Sumit
Thanks. I can’t help you directly but I think you are on the right lines with ACRRM. If you drop me an email to paul@euhealthstaff.eu, I may be able to give you some more advice. (N.B. I’m going to be away until Monday 11th May)

    Hi Aravind

We only have jobs in Australia for UK or Irish trained GPs. I don’t think any of the agencies have hospital jobs for non-Australians at the moment. So, you’d need to apply directly to a hospital to see if they would take you on.

Your GMC registration is unlikely to help with getting registered in Australia though I don’t know for sure.

    Regards

  • Aravind April 17, 2015, 7:45 pm |

    Hello Paul,

I am registered doctor with GMC(UK).I had completed the registration a month back with GMC after clearing the PLAB test and have no working experience in UK. I completed the MBBS degree from India and was working there for 6 years.
I had to come to UK as my spouse work had to be shifted to UK. Now it seems that the location we need to go is Australia.

So my question is will I be able to work in Australia based on the GMC registration ? or do I need to write the AMC test for working in Australia.

If I am able to work in Australia , could you guide me on where to apply and find suitable openings in website

    Hi Paul

    Thx for your efforts …

I am a GP doing practice in United Arab Emirates since 2 years after clearing their Health Authority exam. My basic medical schooling and GP training is from Pakistan. recently i have cleared my MRCGP Intl. could you plz guide me which step do i need to follow for GP job under supervision … thx in advance

    • Paul Brooks April 13, 2015, 6:26 pm |

      Hi Dr Haris

We won’t be able to help but with MRCGP (Int), you may be able to find a supervised post in a remote area of Australia. As far as I know there are only a few such jobs – and a lot of competition from other doctors for them. You could start by checking with the RACGP as to how they will view your qualifications here: https://www.racgp.org.au/selfassess If that route isn’t open to you, try a Google search for ACRRM and see if that route could be an option.

      Regards

    Hi!
I am a doctor working in India with an MD in the field of Dermatology. I would like to know if a specialist doctor can work in Australia. If yes, then are there are any exams that I need to give? What are the job prospects for dermatologists in Australia? Thanks!

    • April February 13, 2015, 2:46 pm |

      Hi Jain
We are in need of dermatologists in Australia but your medical qualifications will require you to work in an area of need as well as undertaking entry under a specialist program –
Check out the Australian College of remote and rural medicine – (ACRRM) in regards to specialist training pathway and APRAH website in regards to the competent authority pathway.
If you decide you would like to come feel free to stay in touch as I own clinics in areas that you would be eligible to work
      regards
      April

  • Paul Brooks February 7, 2015, 9:20 pm |

    Hi Jazz

You would need to hold the qualification of Fellowship with the College of Family Physicians of Singapore to get Category 1 registration.
If you hold “Master of Medicine in Family Medicine” then you’d get Category 2.

Category 1 will open the door to all the vacancies we have. Category 2 doctors can get jobs in Australia – usually in more rural areas. We occasionally have these types of jobs.
This website will guide you on the registration side of things: http://www.racgp.org.au/selfassess/QA/Q

    Regards

    Paul

  • Jazz February 6, 2015, 4:24 pm |

    Hi Paul,

Thank you for answering each and everyone’s queries without losing your patient 🙂

My question is: there is a three yr structured course for GP in singapore. When you say GP from Singapore do you mean to say GPs after completion of the afore mentioned course or any membership exams additionally?

    Thanks.

  • Paul Brooks February 5, 2015, 8:56 pm |

    Hi Sento

Sorry, we only recruit GPs for Australia. However, my understanding is that there are few if any vacancies within the hospital system for overseas trained doctors.

    Regards

    Paul

      Hi Domenica

Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately, I don’t think it will be easy to get a job as a doctor. If you have a look at this website and run through the registration side of things, you can check what category they will give you: http://www.racgp.org.au/selfassess
If they say Category 2, then please send me your CV to paul@euhealthstaff.eu and I’ll see what might be available. Other than that, you could try ACRRM and see if you can get on their programme

      Regards
      Paul

    Hi Paul.

UK national and UK trained GP. Category 1.
Ideally I am looking to do locum type work either with a GP practice or in the after hours setting for around 3 months continuous every year (January to March).

Hence the query is do you get much requests from locum agencies to help them as an agent ?

If you feel you could help to get me a short term job I would welcome your thoughts.

    YJ.

    • Paul Brooks January 30, 2015, 2:50 am |

Hi YJ. Thanks for your enquiry. At the moment, for doctors coming straight from the UK, we only have longer term posts (2 years or longer).

There are shorter term jobs available in Australia but they are typically for doctors who have had some Aussie experience and have PR (Permanent Residency) and RACGP registration

The difficulty from both your and the clinic point of is that AMC / RACGP registration and the visa process take so long (and are quite costly) that it is really only worth it if you are going for a lengthy spell to begin with. Once you’ve worked out there for a couple of years and perhaps have got PR (you can do this once you’ve arrived and it takes about 12 months or so), then, going forward, it would be possible to do shorter term locums.

Let me know if you’d like to discuss further. My email address is paul@euhealthstaff.eu

      Regards

      Paul

Paul may well come back and answer each of you personally, but I just wanted to remind you all that he has answered similar questions with “Australia is only recruiting GPs trained in the UK, Ireland, SIngapore, NZ“.

    Thanks, Bob

      Hi Yousef

As your enquiry is very similar to the one from Dr Szouza, I’m going to give the same answer:
As per the other answers I’ve given, the only demand from GP practices in Australia is for GPs trained in the UK or Ireland. I don’t think there is any international recruitment going on for the hospital system in Australia. Overall, I would think your best option would be the UK. Have a look at this site for registration details: http://www.gmc-uk.org There is a section under “Registration and Licensing” and then on the left hand column “Before you apply” which gives detailed information on the clinical and language requirements needed.

    Hi Mr. Paul,
I am Dr. Adrian DSouza. I have completed my MBBS from St. Johns Medical College, Bangalore and have also worked as the resident medical officer of a 20 bedded hospital as a part of the 2years rural bond required by St. Johns. How can i apply for a job in Australia? I am interested in a clinical subject for my Masters degree.

    Thank you

    hello,
I am an italian trained GP and i am living in Perth, Western Australia with the 457 visa of my husband. In few months we are also planning to get the PR. As an italian GP do i have any chance to get a GP job after i pass the mcq? Alternatively what could be the medical professions that are in need of Italian doctors?
    Thank you.

      Hi Dr Cinzia del Ponte

Thanks for your comment. I think that it will be difficult to get a job in Australia. However, have a look at this website to confirm what category the RACGP will give you: http://www.racgp.org.au/selfassess
If they say Category 2, then please send me your CV to paul@euhealthstaff.eu and I’ll see what might be available. Other than that, you could try ACRRM and see if you can get on their programme

    Hi Dr Gailani

USMLE is a USA qualification and, as far as I’m aware, has no validity in Australia.

Australia is only recruiting GPs trained in the UK, Ireland, SIngapore, NZ. Doctors with other specialities, even if they trained in these countries, will really struggle to get jobs, with success being down to knowing somebody already working in a hospital out there who is able to arrange a fellowship

    Hi,

I am an US trained paediatrician and have finished my three year residency training in US. I am thinking of finding a job in Australia to get some international experience. I would like to practice GP in paediatrics. But I don’t know what the process are. Is it true that foreign doctors can only work in the rural and remote areas in Australia? Thank you!

    Best regards,
    Polly

    • Paul Brooks January 14, 2015, 9:06 pm |

      Hi Polly

What you say is partly true – it is more likely that you would find a job in a remote area than in a city. However, your first hurdle is to be able to get registration. To check on this, look up the appropriate Royal College (probably this one but I’m not 100% sure: https://www.racp.edu.au/page/paediatrics-and-child-health-division/) and see if they will accept your USA credentials. If so, then you will need to look for a job by contacting the hospitals in Australia as I don’t believe any of the agencies are recruiting internationally for paediatrics doctors. On the GP side, you would need to hold a UK, Irish, Canadian, Singapore or NZ family medicine qualification in order to work as a GP over there

    hi
its really appreciating the way u have answered all querries…
i have done MS (ENT) from india.
i just wanna know how to proceed after clearing amc part 1 exam for gp in australia
    regards
    pritesh

    • Paul Brooks January 14, 2015, 9:02 pm |

      Hi Dr Pritesh
I’m sorry but I don’t think you’ll find it easy to get a job in Australia as a GP. Ideally, you need to have trained in the UK, Ireland, NZ, Singapore or Canada as a GP. There are a significant number of doctors in Australia who’ve passed AMC part 1 and who are looking for a suitable supervised posts. I believe there are very few of these available, unfortunately

      Paul
