Getting a Job Sponsorship in Australia and Finding Work

Job Sponsorships

You're hiredWhether it is possible for you to get a job sponsorship or not in Australia is largely dependent upon your skills and qualifications.

I am quoting the Department of Immigration & Border Control (DIBP) from the page on their website specifically about the Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS)…….

Who is this visa for?

“This visa is for Australian employers who want to sponsor highly skilled workers for a permanent visa to work in their business. The employees can be either:

  • highly skilled workers from overseas
  • highly skilled temporary residents currently in Australia.

So, before you can even think about the possibility of getting a job sponsorship, you will need to have a skill and qualifications to match, so your first task is to take a look to see if your skill is on one of these skills lists.

Update: as at 19 April 2017, the Australian Government made significant changes to the skills lists, namely the:

  • Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) replaced the previous ‘Skilled Occupation List’ (SOL)
  • Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL) replaced the previous ‘Consolidated Sponsored Occupation List’ (CSOL)

Please visit the government’s website for more information.

The government’s skills lists

The following page contains a new combined listing of all eligible skills as well as the ANZSCO code and the assessing authorities.

(This link may change, if it no longer gives the information I suggest it does, please let me know in the comments so I can update it.)

Once on that page, you should see a paragraph about halfway down that starts with “A current list of eligible skilled occupations…” and ends with a link to a “Combined current list of eligible skilled occupations.”

Assuming your skill is on one of those lists, how do you then set about getting sponsored? Here are a few ideas:

  • Get yourself a professionally prepared Australian resume.
  • Not all vacancies are publicly advertised, so do some research on Australian companies that might be able to make use of your specific skill. Send them your professional resume direct.
  • Follow up with a telephone call to see if they have received it and at the same time, ask if sponsoring applicants from abroad is something their company would be likely to do.
  • If the company says yes, we would sponsor from abroad, but we have no vacancies at present, ask if you can stay in touch. If they say yes, contact them every three months.
  • Over time, you’ll build a network of people who you know in your trade. This increases your chances of something turning up.
  • Finally, if you get the chance to come out to Australia, line up meetings with these people if you can.

Working Holiday Visas

But if you are young and you qualify for a working holiday visa, you can visit Australia for 12 months (extendable to 24 months under certain conditions) and work. What better way to build on that networking?

Visit: Working Holiday for up to date information from the Australian Government, or my own WHV page for further details.

Of course, there’s also nothing to stop you searching for vacancies online and I have listed the best places to do that further below.

FAQ’s About Getting a Job or Finding Work

I get asked lots of questions about work here in Australia, some questions I get asked again and again. People usually tell me a little bit about their skills, qualifications and what it is they do, and then ask:

  • Will I get a job in Australia?
  • Would I get a sponsorship in Australia?
  • How much money will I earn in Australia?
  • Which city should I go to for the best opportunities for what I do?

So, what are the answers?

Will I get a job in Australia?

This is pretty much the same as the question “Would I get a sponsorship in Australia?” It’s a tough one, impossible to answer.

Nobody can really tell you whether or not you’d get a job in Australia, ultimately that’s down to you to impress a potential employer at an interview, whether that be face-to-face or by Skype or telephone. So it is an impossible question to answer.

It is true to say though that some skills are in more demand here than others, and on that basis if you have a skill that is highly desired in Australia, you would appear to have a better chance. I couldn’t tell you what that chance is though, I simply don’t keep up to date all the latest shortages on any of the skills lists.

I’ve already provided a link to those lists earlier in this article, so you can check for yourself to see if your skill is there. But even if your skill is on one of those lists, there is still no guarantee that you will find a job here.

I really do recommend those who have concerns in this area to talk with a MARA registered migration agent or a recruitment Specialist. My Visa Assessment Service does include a full skills lists search for those looking to come here on any of the General Skilled Migration visas.

How much money can I earn in Australia?

Good question.

If you want to know how much money you might earn here in Australia, that’s actually quite straightforward, please visit the following Australian Government’s website:

Simply search for your skill in their database and find out a huge amount of information, including average weekly earnings.

Which city should I go to for the best opportunities for what I do?

That only leaves one more question to answer, and that’s which city might be best for you given the skill you have. Again, impossible for me to answer, but I would suggest you search any or all of the below recommended online employment agencies for what you do, and simply see which cities or states come up with the most opportunities for what it is that you do.

  • Omar May 14, 2018, 4:00 am |

    Hi Bob,

I currently work within the museum/heritage sector in London. I was wondering if applying for a job outside of Australia, could realistically lead to securing a permanent role? Or,
does one have to be based within Australia, to have a more reliable chance of securing permanent work?

I am not looking to apply for a working holiday visa, as I would like to secure a permanent role, so thought that I’d get in touch. Any information much appreciated. Thank you.

    Best wishes,

    Omar

    • BobinOz May 14, 2018, 7:02 pm |

Most people say that it is significantly more difficult to secure a job from outside of Australia as compared to actually being here. Even people who have moved here and already have a visa allowing them to work in Australia have suggested it’s still difficult to find work as a new arrival, because many Australian employers want to hire people with ‘Australian experience’.

That said, I suppose it’s worth having a go, especially if you think what you do would be in high demand with perhaps a shortage of people here with the skills to do the job.

      • Omar May 23, 2018, 8:33 pm |

        Hi Bob,

        Thank you for the information.

I understand that it can be quite a task, landing a job within ones own given sector when going for a move to Australia, however, hoping for the best!

        Kind wishes,

        Omar

Mr Bob. Pls am at cross road. Am an agricultural scientists. I av 489 visa for Tasmania and south Australia, but don’t know which to go for cos I av neither lived dir before, based on experience and job prospect, where will u recommend

    • BobinOz April 2, 2018, 6:26 pm |

I would definitely go to whichever state you think would give you the best chance of finding a job, because it is often the case that new migrants struggle to get employment when they get here.

You can research jobs via the links here.

  • Joud February 18, 2018, 4:54 pm |

    Hi Bob & everyone,
I’m a Syrian architect, 33 years old and have about 10 years practical experience as an architect. I applied -my self- to AACA for provisional skills assessment, but got rejected, then I appealed hiring a MARA agent and got rejected again. So, my agent advised me to apply for the occupation “civil drafts person”.
My question is: is there any connection between the occupation that you were approved for to be granted a visa and the work that you will do in the future in Australia?
My MARA agent tells that there is NO connection, since the job owner/ companies/ firms will look for your practical experience and skills!!, but really I’m confused, how to proof that I’m an architect for any company in Australia while I have no certification from any Australian authority proofs that I’m an architect? or simply I will never get a job as an architect at all!

    Chears

    • BobinOz February 19, 2018, 5:20 pm |

I have no idea, but if you have concerns, I would get a second opinion from a different MARA agent, making sure also that the agent is registered with MARA.

  • Jonathan February 10, 2018, 3:49 am |

    Hi Bob,
I am based in the UK and have been offered a job by an Australian based company. They are willing to sponsor my 457/new TSS visa, since they could not find anyone else suitable in the Australian labour market for this highly skiled role. However, they want me out there working sooner than the 457 could be granted (8-12 months?). They are proposing I get a working holiday visa, start working for them up to the max of 6 months and whilst I’m out there start applying for the TSS visa, since this could be granted quicker from inside the country, but the TSS also needs to include my partner, who wouldn’t be able to come on a working holiday visa. However I am concerned that this is not the proper (legal?) way of getting over to Oz in the short term. Is there a risk I could be refused entry at the border if they don’t believe I am going in on the right entry visa, and affect my chances of getting the TSS? What is the best way to go about starting work as soon as possible with this company, they will need me to be in Australia periodically whilst the TSS is being processed but is this even allowed e.g. on an e-visa for business visitor activities? This is all very complex! Hopefully there might be another solution to just waiting for however long the TSS takes to be granted to get over to Oz…
    Thanks for your help!
    Jonathan

    • BobinOz February 12, 2018, 4:35 pm |

Yes, it is complicated, and that’s why you should speak to a MARA registered migration agent about your situation. They are the only people who can correctly advise you on this and hopefully the company you are speaking to will have a MARA agent working on their behalf on this.

If they do, that’s who you need to speak to.

Hi Bob, I just came across your page and I’m thankful to find some real advice here. I’m Aleksandra, 23 years old Bulgarian and I’d love to move for work and holiday to Melbourne. My perfect plan would be around 6months. However, I did some research and I found out that my passport/nationality is not entitled to get any kind of work related visa, unless I get a sponsorship. I have experience in hotel and restaurant work but no other specific skills developed in my cv (yet!). I’d really love to get some aussi experience but I’m a bit confused whether a sponsorship would be an option for me at all as having in mind the short time I want to stay. Any advice how can I get there? Thanks in advance:)

    All the best, Alex

    • BobinOz January 2, 2018, 5:03 pm |

As my two important notices at the foot of the above article explain, you need to speak to a MARA registered migration agent about your options. Good luck, Bob

  • Wojtek December 15, 2017, 9:28 am |

    Hi Bob
I dont know if you remember, I did wrote a few times on your website about half a year ago regarding a HUGE move me and the Family were making. So, we are here, enjoying the absolute glamour that the sunshine coast has to offer us, and most importantly, the kids 🙂
Bob, I am writing in regards to a different matter. A good friend of mine from back in Poland, who is running a sports centre (where they lead various courses which give trainer qualifications), is very interested in opening such a centre here in Australia (where he will be employing Australians).
I was waiting for information from a friend whi said he would find something out, but unfortunately, he didnt get any information. What do you recommend? Does he wrote to the immigratuion office? Or maybe a MARA agent? He can talk to an agent without any issues, he is just interested in getting as much information as possible regarding the possibilities he would have to start a business here.
    Thanks Bob,
    Woj 🙂

    • BobinOz December 15, 2017, 4:53 pm |

Yes, I remember you, glad to hear you are now on the Sunshine Coast and loving it.

As for your friend, I think he really does need to talk to a MARA migration agent, probably with a view of inquiring about a business visa. For that reason, he should select a MARA agent who has good experience with these kinds of visas as they are more complicated than most.

I believe your friend will need to prove he has run a successful business which may even need to meet certain financial criteria. That’s why he should speak to a specialist MARA agent as they will know what this criteria is.

      Hope that helps, Bob

      • Wojtek January 15, 2018, 12:02 pm |

Hi Bob. As always, thank you. Yes, you did help. That is what I thought, that a MARA agent would be the best option. As we all know, wether its a Mara agent, a sports coach or a mechanic – there are the good ones and there are the etter ones with better experience and knowledge. Do you maybe have any sort of contact to a MARA agent you could recommend? I did recall you once having info on your page regarding an agent who was somehow working with people thru your webpage? Do you have any sort of contact to him (email if you prefer) 🙂

        Thanks once again Bob

        • BobinOz January 18, 2018, 4:27 pm |

Hi Wojtek, yes, I do have a MARA agent working with me, I’ll have a word with him to see if this is something he can look at. I am actually away on holiday at the moment, but I will try and get hold of him at some point and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.

As I said before though, I think you may need a specialist MARA agent and if that’s the case, I’ll ask my agent if he knows anyone he can recommend.

          • BobinOz January 22, 2018, 5:59 pm |

            Hi Woj

Okay, I have spoken to my MARA agent about this, here is the best way to proceed. Ask your friend to email me direct, details are on my Contact Me page, and I will send him a couple of forms that have been provided to me by my agent, the business skills fact sheet and the business points test.

These are just fact sheets that he can look at to see if he meets the basic criteria. If he thinks he does, then his next step would be to purchase a visa assessment and once he has completed and returned it to my agent they can set up a Skype call to take it further.

I will leave it with you.

            • Woj January 27, 2018, 9:22 am |

Bob, once again thank you for all of your help and apologoes for my belated replies. As you would have remembered, for a family with kids moving to a new country, things are all over the place timewise 🙂
I am passing on this information to my friend and he will be looking through it and contacting the agent directly. As we write now, I have only yesterday by chance found out that friend we have had contact with here (also from Poland) have had unfortunately contact with a dodgy agent. And from what I hear – dodgy with a capital D. Apparantly he files for the wrong visa and filled out everything as wrong as it could have been done. They have now got some serious complications, so I will be passing on these contact details to them. Maybe he can help them out somehow or assist with info for them, what path they need to take to sort this mess out.
              Bob, once again. Thank you.
p.s. I am not here very often, but if you get some ppl from Poland, then surely pass them on my email details and they can email me directly. The reason Poland is because they will surely have questions as to what the differences there are between the two countries. If I would be able to help out with info than I surely will.
Thanks mate. And BTW – late one day, but Happy Straya day to all!! 🙂

              • BobinOz January 29, 2018, 7:47 pm |

Okay, thanks for the offer, if I get anyone from Poland who needs specific help I will refer them to you.

As for your friends who need visa assistance, can you get them to email me first? I have the forms here that are required by your friend for his potential business visa application and I would need to see exactly what has happened with this dodgy agent before we can decide whether it is worth my MARA agent having a second look. My agent does get quite busy at times, so I try to take the load off him whenever I can.

Details of how they can contact me are in my previous comment to you here. Cheers, Bob

  • Michelle Johansen December 13, 2017, 4:39 pm |

    Hi,
I was denied my 2nd year visa after working 6 months as a traffic controller in Darwin (Where everyone that works as a traffic controller only works there to get the 2nd year visa – and they all got it, except me)

I then appealed it – and they took forever to make a decision on it, and I had left the country. The appeal went through and they decided that my application could be looked over again by immigration – by then I had left the country and was told to withdraw my application – which I then did.

Will I be able to apply for my 2nd year visa again ? I feel like it was unfair that they denied me – saying that traffic control does not count towards the 2nd year visa – which is true if you do it in any other state but NT. All my friends applied at the same time as me and all got theirs granted except me (We had the same dates and everything on the application – all that was different was our name). If the answer is yes, I then want to go through an immigration-agent to make sure everything is done right.

My wife is working as Adjunct Faculty in a UAE based college in Business and Accounting and a PHD holder and currently pursuing Post Graduate certificate in higher education along with her part time teaching. I have a daughter in Grade 10; will be going to Grade 11 in Apr 2018.
Like all expats, having a few queries listed below.
    1. How is the IT Job market in Adelaide, for IT manager and project managers and Business Analysts?
    2. How is the teaching jobs for grade 11 and undergraduate courses in accounting and business?
    3. For my daughter, who would be going to grade 11 in Apr 2018, is there any CBSE schools or alternates?
Request your guidance on the above. Hoping to process the VISA soon.
    Regards,
    Jagan

Well, I’m probably not as good a mentor as you hoped I was, because I just don’t know the full specifics of the job market in Adelaide. It might be worth asking these kinds of questions on my page about Adelaide, maybe a local will help out.

If you read the comments already made on that page though, you will see that most people think jobs are really hard to come by in Adelaide, and that’s all jobs. It’s even more difficult for newly arrived migrants as well, because many people say it’s who you know not what you know.

Perhaps somebody local on that page can help you out about the schools as well.

      Good luck, Bob
