We’re considering possibly moving to the area in the future as our son and his wife now live in Perth, but where’s a good place to live if you’re older and retired? We currently live in Brighton England as we like a lively fun place with lots of arts, theatre, music and cafe culture.

Fremantle is a busy kind of place with lots going on, and I absolutely loved Margaret River, although that is three hours drive from Perth.

Apart from that, I have to leave it to somebody else to help you out. Worth looking at the comments on my main page about Perth as well as there’s lots of talk about the suburbs.

What does your son and his wife think? Maybe they have some ideas.

My wife and and I are retired. We currently live in Hong Kong. We are both Aus passport holders having lived in Melbourne (16yrs) with some time in Sydney. After 22 years in HK we are looking a nice suburb in Perth to consider moving to. We are not looking for a house but a decent apartment with maybe river views and a large terrace/balcony. It should also be well served by public transport (spoiled with our MTR here) as I do not want to buy another car.
Any ideas? Price AUD500K to 800K approx.

Well, this is a question I will need to leave to the locals, my knowledge of Perth is not up to it. You may want to have a look at my main page about Perth as well and look through the comments there, it gets much more traffic than this one so it has much more information about the suburbs.

It might even be worth asking a similar question over there. Hopefully a local will see it and help you out. Good luck with your move, Bob

    Hi Bob,
My family and I are seriously considering a move to Perth in 2018 from Canada and my husband is working on getting sponsored by a company as he is in the oil and gas industry. I was wondering if you knew much about the economy in Perth as of right now and if its starting to recover from its down turn. Also, any advice on any other areas in Austraila where this industry is relevant. Also- love your website! You popped up on google at the top of my list when I googled “best blogs about moving to Australia” and its been so helpful. Cheers!

Thanks, glad to hear you like my website.

As far as I know, the economy in Perth is still pretty awful with little signs of anything likely to get better. I would actually be quite shocked if your husband were to manage to get sponsored to work in the oil and gas industry, because there must be more out of work oil and gas professionals in Perth and the surrounding area than you could shake a stick at.

I’m not really knowledgeable enough about oil and gas here, but I suspect Queensland may well be a better option than Western Australia. Each year I write a post about the State of States report from Commsec, you can see my last article about it here…

It is worth a read, and you can get more up-to-date reports direct from them as they do them each quarter. That should help you find out how good, or more likely bad, the economy is in Perth right now. Good luck, Bob

    Dear Bod,

i am making myself for IELTS exam. as i hired a lawyer to immigrate, and seems i am eligible. he is going to apply my job in Perth and he said that IELTS 6 is what i needed.
but some body said that with IELTS 6 i am not able to go to Prtth city, i have to stay on the country. i wonder whether that is true? i mean IELTS 6 is enough to go to inner Perth?

    thanks in advance

Do you want to believe ‘somebody’ or do you want to trust your lawyer? If he is MARA registered he would know all the rules and as he knows your full circumstances, I would listen to him.
