How I moved to Australia
One of the most common questions I am asked is “I want to move to Australia, where do I start?” And I suppose the answer for everyone is slightly different.
But I do know what the answer was for me was and I have documented the process that we went through to move to Australia, from the initial idea right the way through to finally arriving in Australia with permanent residency status.
But I have realised of late that most of these articles have disappeared into the archives and if you can find them, the titles aren’t very descriptive. Titles like Moving to Australia Part Three and Moving to Australia Part Four.

me and my partner want to move over to baldivis we have family there but we are saving up around 20k over 4 years from now my partner is training to be a registered nurse in mental health and I’m a NVQ Level 3 auto electrician in motor vechile repair but have no time spent in this employment… what visa should we get and would we pass the point test because iv passed 3 of 4 points test but the one that i thought i would need said i failed… that one was the family visa can i get some help

Hi Bob. I am an Adult Social Worker, I have emailed recruitment agencies in Oz asking for advice on how to apply for work; still waiting for responses after several emails to them. Reason why I have contacted agencies is that in the person spec, it asks if your an overseas worker looking for employment in Oz. Can you help in this area, is better to apply for a post, then look at visa options, is better to apply to emigrate immediately? I’d like to think I would have a job waiting for me rather than head over and have all the stress. Can you provide best agencies in Oz that would consider a UK, Adult Social Worker.

Hi Nicola, I have to agree with you, at the moment it would be far less stressful to arrive here with a sponsored job waiting for you, getting a job after you have arrived can be quite a challenge in the current climate.

I’m currently in the process of taking my final exam in electric guitar (fellowship diploma) highest degree in music and I was wondering if that I would be eligible for a skilled work visa or a distinguishable talent visa? I want to carry on my career as a guitar teacher or music teacher over in Oz, I’ve checked to see if I’m eligible but the visa system leaves me baffled and confused! It’s all very vague, it’s an internationally recognised qualification and one more thing I’ve searched for teaching vacancies and I’ve had a few come up but I’m not sure if they’re a big enough company to sponsor or even nominate me.

I’ve only just come across your website and I’m gutted I haven’t seen it sooner!
I have a quick question that may be a silly one so bear with me! My partner and I would like to move to Australia – it is only a recent revelation and it won’t happen for a couple of years yet but when it does say if one is us gets sponsored or gets a skilled work visa – does the other person have to have a similar visa that allows them in or can you bring your partner/family with you on one visa??
I hope that makes sense, any advice would be great 🙂

The usual procedure is that the main applicant, that would be the applicant who qualifies for the visa, in this case a skilled visa I suspect, can include their dependents in their application.
That’s immediate dependents, so spouse and dependent children. If you have any doubts about the procedure and need help in understanding how it all works, I strongly advise you to seek the help of a MARA registered migration agent.

Myself and my partner (25/23 respectively) have recently returned to England (Wiltshire) from a trip around QA/NSW for Christmas & New Year. We, like many others, fell in love with Australia as soon as we landed.
We have just began the idea phase and your website is sincerely helping with our ambition to make dreams a reality. I feel as though I have read just about every page your site has to offer and yet I continue to learn more and more. If I am honest though, one of the main reasons we love Australia is swiftly becoming a reason to loathe it.. my gosh, it really is difficult to gain a visa isn’t it!
Anyway Brisbane was our first & favourite location and so I hope to follow in your footsteps sometime soon. My ‘de-facto’ partner works in HR and so has a skilled job (like Karen) – though only on the Consolidated Skilled Occupations List (albeit not currently on the Queensland SOL!) & so we hope that will be our ticket in eventually.

Yes, I think generally speaking it’s true that at least three or four years work experience is preferred, but you really should speak to a MARA registered migration agent about that, they are the only people who can advise you with some certainty. Good luck, Bob

We are making our first visit to Perth,WA coming December 1st week and plant to stay there in a week and return back to India. Yes, that does mean you have to pay first, but then you get to fill in all the relevant information needed by my agent to fully assess your situation. If you contact him without having completed the questionnaire, he cannot help, because he does not know your full situation.

What’s the best way to permanently move to AUS as a 20 year old? I know we’re suppose to pay for the assessment service but I don’t think I’d pass so I’m just wondering if you could help put my mind at ease as to what to aim for etc as I would like to start a new life out there.
I planned on coming to AUS on working holiday VESA and re applying for another 12 months (so 2 years in total if that’s correct and possible?) next year with my best friend. We would be staying with either her auntie, cousin or uncle who are residents who could possibly supply us with work, if not they’d help us find some and then we’d eventually look to rent our own place. I would have worked at my medical receptionist/admin job for almost 3 years when I plan to move. This has been an apprenticeship which I have completed business and administration level 1, 2 and 3.
From what I unserstand it’s pretty hard to migrate unless you’re a doctor or in a high profession but I’m still not entirely sure what I aspire to be. I may even decide once I’m over there that I want to study to further my education. I don’t understand why there isn’t an option for younger people to migrate permanently without having major skills
It’s not easy and as you know, I can’t specifically advise you. All I can tell you is that it might help if you had a specific skill that was on one of the skills lists here in Australia, my pages about Visas and Getting a Job or a Sponsorship can help you research that.

Hi can you advise my son’s ex wants to emigrate to Australia with their one year old daughter. However she is currently a single parent on benefits in the UK. However her mum is emigrating to Australia with her two brothers that have disabilities but are able to work her mum is a nurse. Will my son’s ex who is 19 with a criminal record be allowed to emigrate? They have joint parental rights.

You should also have your son speak to a solicitor, my understanding is that his ex cannot take his daughter out of the country without signed permission from your son, but as I say, your son should speak to a solicitor to get that confirmed.

Moving on to my query, I am 21 years old and have qualified from university with a Teaching Degree, I am half way through my first year of teaching, and by July 2016 I will be a fully qualified teacher.

This isn’t a question I can answer Emily, only MARA registered migration agents are allowed to advise on how to get a visa. So you would need to speak to a MARA agent about this or, if you prefer, go through my Visa Assessment Service which is done on my behalf by a registered MARA migration agent based here in Australia.

Hi Bob. I am 42 and a very qualified individual. (electrician and hgv mechanic amounts other qualifications) we (my wife and I and two young daughters started the immigration process a few years back.)
We were out off once I found out that I was type 1 diabetic! And that that austrailia wouldn’t entertain me??? (this was a migration agents view and wasn’t backed up by any fact or data, just a vague email)
As you are probably aware England is and is fast becoming a place that is not the greatest place to work and live! So we are again thinking of emmigrating….
My question to you is this:
How does diabetes affect the emmigrating candidate…(cost and potential success in gaining residency)
Who can I contact with regards ongoing care (insulin cost and availability etc)

If you Google “Fact Sheet 22—The Health Requirement” you will see the government’s advice regarding health issues. Health is assessed individually by Australian authorised doctors and whether or not you would pass the medical isn’t something a MARA agent can decide. It is for the examining doctor to provide a medical report to the immigration department and the immigration department decide from that whether you pass the medical or not.
If you read that fact sheet, I think you will conclude, as I did, that it is highly contagious diseases and also conditions that cannot be cured and are rather expensive in terms of ongoing treatment that seem to cause the most problems. I know your diabetes isn’t contagious, but I don’t know what’s involved with your treatment. Either way, I can’t advise and I’m not sure a MARA agent could give you a 100% sure answer either.
If you go through my Visa Assessment Service then my agent could assess your options based on your qualifications and you can always ask him his opinion about whether your diabetes might affect your application in a covering email or the follow-up telephone discussion.
I’m sure he will be able to give you some strong guidelines, but as I say, he could not tell you for sure whether you would pass the medical or not.

I have a situation, where I am in the verge of getting my Canadian citizenship, but my PR (as per grant letter) is expiring next month. I wish to move to Australia but do not want to forego the Canadian citizenship. As I have not been much in Australia in the past 5 years, I am not eligible for RRV as no close ties.
So is it possible to travel on Canadian passport (ETA) and then start living there as a permanent resident. Please advise
That would be a question for a MARA migration agent or maybe even by trying to ask whoever was your case officer within DIBP. I’m afraid I simply don’t know all the rules and only MARA migration agents are legally allowed to answer these kinds of questions under Australian law.

Hi Bob my wife and I with our two children ( 9 and 14) want out of the UK and really like the sound of the values that oz has to offer motto mention the people and of course weather.
I run a small 3d Animation studio from home which does really well. I create content for TV commercials and corporates.
I have heard odd hearsay that you need thousands in the bank to be allowed to move over. How true is this? How might I be able to transfer my skills and my knowledge over in oz? I imagine my clients in the UK would quickly fade away with time zone issues.
I have looked through the skilled jobs sections of various websites regarding what is needed in Australia but found nothing in my field .
Surely it must be used over there as much as it is here ? I think it would be best if I went in to work within some kind of creative agency not just for the money but also for the social aspect as coming over and working from home immediately would probably make it difficult at first to find clients and make friends. Any ideas welcome as I know it’s s bit of a unique and niche area. Thanks for all of you hard work helping people out. Top man. Phil

Yes, it is a rather unique a niche area, I would not have a clue how to advise you on this. All I would suggest is that Australia isn’t really that much different from the UK in terms of TV, media and advertising, so however you got your business off the ground over there would probably work just as well over here.
As for having thousands in the bank to be allowed to move here, it really doesn’t work like that. Moving to Australia is an expensive business, so you will need thousands, but as far as I’m aware there isn’t a monetary minimum that you need to have in the bank before you got issued with some kind of visa.
That said, there are many criteria you will need to meet to be granted a visa to allow you to move here and work, you can read a bit about that on my page called Would I Qualify?

I have been interested in Australia for a year now and really want to make a full move there if I can, I have 2 small children and run an online business, would I be accepted a move across there with an online business? I receive good income from my business and have already done some research to see if it would be as successful over there as it is in the UK and have no doubts it will do fine 🙂 my mum is very supportive and has offered me £20,000 from her house sale if I would like to start a new life in Australia so I would have a nice sum of money to live off while I find my feet and get my business up and running across there.

I’m afraid moving to Australia is a little more complicated than that, there are something like 130 different types of visa available and what you need to know is would you qualify for one that would allow you to live here on a permanent basis and work while you are here.

The only people who can really tell you with any accuracy if you would be able to qualify for a visa would be a MARA registered migration agent, so I suggest you speak to one of those. Or you can go through my assessment service which is mentioned on the page I’ve suggested you take a look at.

This question is basically for my sister. She is a single mother and wants to make a fresh start abroad with Australia being her preference. I am aware of the fact that the process isnt that or simple or easy. However, she is a Ph.D in Psychology and has been a lecturer for the past 5-6 years. As she has a Pd.D, so automatically it makes her a Doctor also. You had mentioned in your post that Doctors and Nurses are required in Australia. So a Ph.D in Psychology with decent amount of work experience in a reputed profession and also being a Dr. professionally, does it work in her favour or not? I know that she isn’t the real doctor as you have mentioned in doctors and nurses.

You need to successfully register to operate as a doctor in Australia, whether your sister can do that or not depends largely on where she received her training. I can’t help you any more, but I can point you to my page about Doctors in Australia, it has some helpful links and information about it.

Good luck with your planned move to Australia, agent free, and also with your website, I hope both go very well.
I now sit in the camp that always advises using a MARA agent, simply because the fees to government for these visas are extremely high and if you put forward an application that fails, you lose that money. Using an agent acts as a kind of insurance against that, because they are very good at putting forward successful applications.
That said, some visas are easier to get than others, depending on your circumstances, so using an agent is not always necessary. I hope it works out for you.
