On 1 July 2012 Expression of Interest or EOI came into play and the very next day, on 2 July 2012 I wrote this post about it. This post is still relevant today and from time to time I do update the information where necessary. The last update took place 20 February 2018.
Every year the The Department of Home Affairs reviews and revises the visa application process. They look at the jobs on the skills list, how the points are allocated and the whole process of making the visa application.
Then they tweak it all and come up with some new rules and procedures and announce them, usually, on July 1.
Expression of Interest or EOI
Here’s the process step-by-step, I’ll explain each stage in a minute:
Skills Select
- Expression of Interest
- Getting picked from the pool
Expression of Interest
Skilled applicants will be able to go online and enter their own EOI. The information they will be required to input will be quite thorough, equivalent to the six pages worth of information required to complete a Visa Assessment here on BobinOz.
Getting picked from the pool
Technically, you could get picked out of the pool by any one of Australia’s states or territories who require your skills, or any employer, or even The Department of Home Affairs themselves. You will get an invitation if you are nominated by the states or territories or if your occupation is on the SOL and you meet the qualification criteria you will receive an invitation directly from SkillSelect. You can still find your own sponsor and it is probably advisable to continue looking for one as nobody is really sure just how many states or employers will be scanning this system for people.
Once you are selected or have found your own sponsor, you move to the next stage.
Visa Application:
- Pay the Visa Application Charge (VAC)
- Your information is then verified
- Fast track to Australia
So, what happens at each stage?
Once you have been invited – by either Skillselect for an independent visa or invited on the basis of a state or territory nomination, you move to the next stage.
You have 60 days in which to apply after being selected. The great thing about this process is it is fast!
Pay Visa Application Charge (VAC)
Of course, your visa application will have a fee involved, payable to the Australian Government. You will be required to pay this fee with your application.
Your information is then verified
Remember that EOI you completed online a while back? I hope you didn’t tell any little white lies on it. I remember going for a job interview when I was about 18 years of age. Of course, I had a CV prepared. I never much liked the section called “Hobbies and Interests”, at the time mine were going to the pub, getting drunk and partying.
That’s not what a prospective employer wants to see, is it?
So I put sport and photography.
The interview went well, but right at the end, the interviewer said “So, what camera do you use?”
I looked at him in utter bewilderment; I’d forgotten my own hobbies. He reminded me of what I’d put on my CV and asked again what camera I used.
“It’s just a normal camera.” I said weakly.
Yes, many of us can tell little white lies to get that job on occasions.
DON’T DO IT!!
Not on an EOI. I will explain why under the pitfalls below.
Fast track to Australia
Yay! If all goes well, you will be in Australia in no time. But what about…
The pitfalls!

When you complete your EOI online, there are no checkpoints in it. If you want to put yourself down as a brain surgeon with 15 years experience, you can. You can create a profile with 100 points if you want.
The system will accept it and place you in a queue.
Obviously, nobody in their right mind would do that, but maybe you’d be tempted to say you have four years experience when you have just over three? Or to say you have a qualification when you are still waiting for the result of that exam?
No, you wouldn’t do that, would you?
How about this then? There is a tick box somewhere along the line asking if you have had your skill assessed by the relevant authority. Maybe you are in the process of doing that, maybe you are thinking of doing it, maybe you tick yes.
Maybe you enter any kind of information into this document that isn’t quite correct. What happens?
If you enter incorrect information:
- You are automatically refused when the discrepancy comes to light.
- You will lose your Visa Application Charge fee.
- You could possibly be banned from reapplying for three years.
The EOI that you complete online is a legal document, please complete it with 100% accuracy, or you could be very sorry indeed.
As I have said already, you can enter the information for your EOI yourself. At this stage, it appears that non-MARA registered migration agents can also charge you a fee to help you with this process.
“Yah, I’m an expert EOI form filler, here’s my card :-). I can fill it in properly for you for just $300!”
Kerching!
If you do not want to fill in this form yourself, and you do want help, I strongly suggest that you use only a professional MARA registered migration agent or a qualified lawyer. It’s a legal document and great care has to be taken when completing it.
The official Expression of Interest page
As you probably know, the rules, regulations and procedures can, and often do change at any time when it comes to applying for visas and migrating to Australia. Every effort is made to ensure the information provided by this website is as accurate as possible, but nobody is as up-to-date as the Australian government themselves.
For this reason, is always best to get your information directly from The Department of Home Affairs. Here is a link to their page on this subject:
Finally, I want to provide you with a link to the Australian government’s page where you can submit an EOI, login to SkillSelect and also check occupational ceilings and the current invitation round numbers. Well, you can do a lot more than that when you visit…
Comments: Please read…
Since this post went live on July 2, 2012 it has attracted a huge amount of interest and, at the time of writing this, approaching 2000 comments.
It is obvious that this process, Expression of Interest, is hugely confusing and many of you are having problems with it. Almost all of the comments below are questions about this process.
I would need to be a MARA registered migration agent to know the answers to these questions and I’m not. The above article was written after I had spoken at length to a professional MARA agent, for any of you who have read the article, you probably now know as much about EOI as I do.
I am keeping comments open on this post, but I will not be able to answer any questions. Hopefully somebody else who does know might pop by with an answer, but I would also suggest that you do have a quick look at all the comments that have already been made as your question may have already been covered.
Good luck to you all,
Bob
PS. The notices below, in a way, repeat what I’ve just said above but they also fully clarify my situation when it comes to comments.
Dear Bob,
Thanks for all the info you provide. Really helpful.
My query would be, I have filed my EOI with NSW under the skill, Recruitment Consultant with 60 points. The same was filed on 30/05 and as per timelines I should get the invite within 12-16 weeks. But there has been no response from the NSW team.
Any idea on how much time should I wait for receiving the invite as it will cross the TAT in few days.
Also if anyone from the group has applied under similar skill can provide some info.
Regards
BS
Hi BS, I am looking into visas myself and can answer your question. Your EOI will be kept for I think 2 years. If you havent heard from them be patient. Depending on your qualifications/occupation there might be applicants with more points than you. 60 is really just the minimum of the points. But if, lets say, they are looking for Accountans and everyone applied but you with around 60+ points your chances are higher. If they have 500 visas to tive for accountants and have 500 applicants with 80+ points that your EOI wont be looked into.
Keep uploading your EOI and meanwhile try to educate yourself to get more points.
Log your EOI in the skilled select and a sponsor might see this and would like to sponsor ou. Just like Bob said: it will be easier than applying for a PR straight away.
hope I could help.
And also- you need to check the occupation list for your visa. These are different from visa to visa!
A MARA agent is requesting a sign to be scanned to him and sign should be on plain white background paper. Agent is in Australia and we are in India.
Has anyone experienced this?
I don’t know if this is common practice or not, but I can understand why you might feel uncomfortable about it.
Can anybody else help Vug with this? Or has anyone else been asked to do this?
hello,
i missed the GTE telephonic interview.I have applied for masters in deakin university.will they call again for interview?
Hi
How long after a positive skills assesment can you lodge EOIN ?
Dear Bob,
In June, I got invited for 189, with 60 points, as Materials Engineer. Yet, I had made a mistake in work experience dates. For one of my work experience dates, I had entered 05.10.2012 instead of 05.11.2012.
Another mistake I made was about the same company, I got a work accident and did not work for 2,5 months. Yet, I was still employed by the company for this period but got paid from the government instead of the company, with %70 of my original salary. After my doctor report dates were finished, I left the company.
Due to these problems, I was not going to apply. I would wait for 3 years work experience to be completed (around October 2017) and get 60 points again for submitting a new EOI.
This invitation I got is going to expire on 25th August so I want to get your opinion. If you think that these problems can be fixed, I would like to apply to the invitation I already have.
Your help will be appreciated.
Oh, I must mention. One of my work experience is 2 months of orientation (related). Afterwards, I moved to another job. I am claiming points for that too. Is that ok?
Hi Bob,
I need a suggestion, I am going to apply for EOI for Australia.
I am married and as of now we both have decided that only i would be applying for VISA file and fees after receiving ITA and once i moved there , I would file my Spouse’s VISA file.
So, In this case while filing for EOI what options are to be selected in following below options mentioned in EOI.
1. Are there any family members the client would like to include in future application ?: Yes/No
2. Would the client be accompanied by the client’s partner in a future application ?:Yes/No
Kindly provide your valuable suugestion..
Thanks
Hi Divyesh
Can we connect?
Hi Bob,
I need one information If i applied under Mechanical Technician & Skill assessment through TRA, than after getting Visa can i apply for Engineer work & how skill assessment linked with Job ,If i can clear interview.
Tanish
Dear Sir/Ma,
I write to make few enquiries concerning Australian migration.
I started working in 2011 after my HND programme as Production Technician (equivalent to Fitter) and in 2012, I was admitted into a Bachelor’s degree programme in Mechanical Engineering (full-time). This means that I was studying while at the same time doing full time work (although I have been running shifts and this allowed me to have time for my studies). In addition, I was successfully assessed by Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) as Fitter couple of months ago.
For my skill assessment as a Fitter (General), I used both ND and HND qualifications so that my work experience would count. Following are my qualifications to date:
* National Diploma (ND) in Mechanical Engineering (2007).
* Higher National Diploma (HND) in Mechanical Engineering (2011).
* B.Eng in Mechanical Engineering (January, 2017).
As it stands, with ND/HND (10pts), work experience (10pts), age (30pts, will be reduced to 25pts by October) and IELTS (0 pt – LRWS -7, 6.5, 7.5, 6.5) I have gathered 50 points. However, with ND/HND/B.Eng (15pts), work experience (10pts), age (30pts, will be reduced to 25pts by October) and IELTS (0 pt – LRWS -7, 6.5, 7.5, 6.5) I will gather 55 points which I can support with 5 points from state nomination for visa Sub-class 190.
Now my question is, can I include my B.Eng qualification in my EOI and visa application along with my diplomas to claim 15 points, include it without claiming points for it or shoud not include it at all even though I didn’t use it for my skill assessment.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks and best regards.
Sorry, I had to accessed my BA degree by VETASSESS then i got 5 points extra, this process hardly takes 3 weeks, there is a fees required for this process about 200 AUD.
Hello Bob,
I have an issue, I recently got a positive assessment for ANZSCO 261112 from ACS. However, I used diploma for the assessment and not my degree as my degree is not related to the occupation. Now can I use this degree to claim points for education (15 points) instead of using the diploma (10 points) without getting it accessed by VETASSESS?
I have checked the CEP and found my institution and degree type. Please advice.
Yes dear you can get 15 point by using degree as i have diploma in ece, but i got 15 point using BA
Good Day Bob
I applied for 190 and submitted an EOI and thereafter the NSW nomination form. Whilst NSW has approved my nomination and sent me invite to lodge visa online yet they have reduced my points by 10 from 70 to 60 due to confusion over bachelor degree or diploma (i did a 3 year diploma equivalent to a bachelor degree.
A MARA I spoke with said lodging the visa may face rejection due to difference in points between EOI and State nomination and he needs to get legal opinion and I shouldn’t submit the form and go through him, whilst I am ok to do so, can you advice if its not just me going hyper about the MARA trying to con me , ideally shouldn’t the state nomination points override the details submitted in EOI?
Many Thanks in Advance
I am not a MARA agent, so I don’t know. If you don’t trust the MARA agent you spoke with, get a second opinion from another MARA agent and see what they say.
You can search for MARA registered migration agents via the link on my page about Migration agents.
Good luck, Bob
Hi,
I got an invitation on 21 june to apply for my PR (VISA 189) under electrical engineer and I submitted all the documents and made the payment. Approximately how long will it take for me to get my PR finally ? I had a total of 60 points
I am writing to you regarding the skilled independent visa (Subclass 189). At the moment, I am preparing to upload my document to immi account since I have received an invitation through Skill Select to proceed and apply for the Visa. I was intending to add my widowed mother who is completely financially dependent on me. However, I have read earlier through many websites that this is impossible since a decision made on 2016 that parents shall not be granted a permanent residency visa.
Could you please tell me if that’s true, further, what are the proofing documents that I shall present?
Another thing, if i feel lucky and optimist, and I decided to keep my mother’s application as dependent having all the necessary documents that prove that she’s a dependent but nevertheless she fails.. will I fail being granted a visa too? not for health reasons but generally not being convincing for the agent that she’s a dependent.
One last thing, if i keep her and she fails visa subclass 189, will she risk the chance to be granted a regular tourist visa 600 if she applies directly afterwards?
If she can’t be included in my visa please advise how can I remove her from the EOI and if I should do that prior to applying for my PR visa?
Another thing, if She is to apply for a tourist visa (subclass 600) what would be a guaranteed option for her to get a longer stay visa? Should I get her an invitation from friends residing currently in australia or provide my work certification and bank pay slips with a good amount of money in the account and a paper from the bank that verifies that I will sponsor her trip with a hotel and flight reservations for 3 weeks for example, knowing that the intention is to get a minimum of 3 months visa.
Note that i will be applying for PR (subclass 189) simultaneously.
Thank you in advance.
As my two very important notices at the foot of the above article explain, I’m not able to give this kind of advice. You really do need to see a MARA registered migration agent about this.
What I can tell you though is that you cannot ‘game’ the system, so going for a tourist visa first for your mother and then looking at a way of extending that for longer is just not going to work out for you, immigration usually doesn’t appreciate those kinds of things.
As I say though, please do see a MARA registered migration agent so you can approach this in the correct way.
Hi Bob
I have submitted my EOI for 190 visa on 26th May 2017 and updated the same on 10th June 2017.
I wanted to know that do the 190 EOI invites show up in the correspondence tab in Skillselect where I’ve filed the EOI? or does it come as an email?
How will I get to know that I have got an EOI invitation from NSW ?
I was selected as one of the worthy nominees of EOI sub-class 202 in may 2017 UN Global Humanitarian and Family Resettlement Programme. I have gone through the process at both Department of Immigration and Border Protection and Department if Foreign Affairs and Trade, Australia. Now before my visa is granted i have been directed to pay $495 each for myself and 2 family members who will accompany me to Australia and since i don’t have credit card I’m to pay via email ecobank to one of their Regional offices (DEFAT) West Africa specifically Banju, Gambia. I’m from Ghana and want to know if really it’s genuine or otherwise in order to make decision within the next 24hrs.
This amount $495 each for the 3 of us is for Entry Clearance Certificate to the Department of Immigration and Border Protection. send the receipt together with my qualifications, chest x-ray, birth certificate, passport size pictures etc else within the next 5 working days( actually it was 7 working days).
Thank you. Hope to hear from you as soon as possible!
Benjamin, I think you are right to be a little sceptical, although the fee of $495 for three of you sounds more than reasonable. It’s difficult/impossible for anybody to be able to tell you whether what you’ve been through is genuine or not, but it is not, it sounds as though someone’s been through an awful lot of trouble for such a small reward.
You’ve seen the paperwork, sounds like you’ve been dealing with DIBP, I assume you have the address of the office they want you to pay the money into, and you obviously have an internet connection, I think you just need to do a little more research to verify all is good.
Don’t be afraid to telephone somebody in Australian immigration to ask for confirmation about those regional offices either, I’m sure they won’t mind. Good luck, I hope it all works out, Bob
Hi Bob!
Your website has been very insightful under each heading! thanks for all the info!
I am in the process of applying my EOI and have a few questions.
PTE scores are L-83, R-79, S-76, W-75 with an average of 77.
I have recvd a positive response from VETESSES for my application to them.
My total points structure :
Age – 30
English Exam – 10
Education – 15
Work Experience (total of 4 years till date) – 5
1. At the time of submitting my application to VETESSES, my work exp was 3.7 years. They assessed 1 year under the skills category and 2.7 as work experience. However, now I complete 2.7+5 months with the same organisation and same role. Will I qualify for 5 points with an experience of 3 years or do I need to give a re assessment to VETESSES?
2. While I leave the ’till date’ blank under work experience (since I am still employed in the same job) will the EOI consider 5 points ? Is it fine to do so or do we need to specify the information as assessed by VETESSES?
3. Considering the above points, EOI before submission states a claim of 65 points, while I am claiming 60 to the best of my knowledge. Does it include 5 points of SS?
What are the chances currently for an SS to be recvd from SA where my job is listed under CSOL under special category?
Thank you in advance!!
Hi Bob!
I have my degree assessed by Engineers Australia. I recently completed my one year experience. Do I have to get my experience assessed by EA for Victorian state sponsorship? I have one year experience overseas which is not assessed. I asked these question from many, however, i could not get a correct answer. Please help.
The only people who can really correctly answer your question are those registered as a MARA agent. see the text above in the orange coloured boxes .
Hi Bob. We have been invited for NSW nominations. But my concern is my husband had a DUI arrest 9 yrs ago in the US. Will this affect our visa approval as he is the primary applicant. Should we go ahead with applying for visa.
No, I really don’t think this will be an issue, but if you Google “Fact Sheet 79 – The Character Requirement” you will find out much more information which I think will put your mind at ease.
Hi Bob,
Appreciate your help you been providing.i have a question i am being invited by NSW authority as state nominee. But in my case i my IELTS score expired long back .I have received mail from skilled migration for proof that i have applied for IELTS. My problem is that i haven’t applied for one as i wont get slots easily is 1 it ok to apply for test after you get invitation 2 what kind of time frame i will get to clear the exams.
Hi Bob,
Can I update the EOI and have +5 migration points for partner’s skills AFTER submission of the EOI and when partner’s required doc are ready?
Many thanks!
– Jenn
Hi Bob,
My husband is the primary applicant of our australian immigration application . We had lodged the application and now was waiting for the results ..
Long time ago after graduation back in 2009 when I was eager to find a good job I stated in my CV that I had stayed in a foreign country for 4 years … which I did … from the age of 0 years to 4 years.
My husband shared my info including my cv in his application … And I completely forgot this part of my life and my cv hence didn’t mention it in form 80, which you have to fill before lodging .
Now the case officers has pointed this out on my Cv … And requesting me to fill the, form again … does this sound like a deal breaker or something ..
I seriously don’t wasn’t to jeopardize my husbands opportunities due to this 🙁 .. would my infant passport details be enough to prove this?
Obviously I can’t answer on behalf of immigration, but I don’t think you should need to worry about this too much. If it was a dealbreaker, I’m not sure why they would ask you to complete the form again, I think it’s more likely to be the case that they just want the information on the application to be correct.
I think one of the reasons they need to know which countries you have lived in is so that they can be sure to get police clearance checks for each of those countries. I very much doubt you were robbing banks at such a young age, so I can’t see a problem.
As I say though, I really don’t know what they’re thinking is but I wouldn’t be too concerned at this stage if I were you. Good luck, Bob
Hi Bob,
I have got invitation to lodge an visa application under subclass 190 (Victoria sponsorship, Anzsec code 261399 – Software Developer and Application programmer nec) on 21st April. While filing expression of Interest i have updated my experience from June 2009. However, according to ACS guidelines i should update my experience 2 years later because my experience is verified/assessed from June 2011. Now, i gained 5 points more and got the invitation at 65 points.
Now, should i lodge my visa application after correcting in the form 80 or should i file for new expression of Interest.
I have submitted my ACS report 3yrs back as system administrator and got cleared. Now, it got expired. I am planning to re-apply for new ACS and I am into Software Engineer profession. I would like to know if I change the roles and responsibilities of my previous employers which are submitted to ACS matching to software engineer roles, will my new ACS will get impacted? Does ACS compares the previous and new one? Please need advice on this ASAP.
Hi mark and bob..
I have applied 190 visa application and waiting for decision.. I had one question which I asked to my MARA agent by sending a SMS… whom I paid lot of money to handle my case ..I was astonished and surprised by his behaviour when he told me he would send this SMS to Department else he is asking for money.. I am sure that SMS is not having something fishy but he is trying to blackmail me.. I am not sure what can I do at this stage..
If you think you’re MARA agent is blackmailing you, then you should report this to MARA.org; you will find a link to their page on my page about Migration agents.
Hi Bob, Mark,
I submitted my EOI in June 2016 for “Market Research Analyst profession (ANZSCO 225112)” which was a part of the SOL at that time. On April 18th , 200 jobs were take off (delisted) from SOL (Skilled Occupation List).
So what happens to my EOI filed already for the above ANZSCO ? What are the ways now in front of me to get a PR?
Regards,
Masuttan
That’s a question I can’t answer, see my important notices above. I suggest you speak to a MARA registered migration agent.
Hi,
I have a query, if you could help me regarding this, it will be great help for me.
I have submitted my EOI. So my question is “after receiving invitation to apply for visa, what will be the deadline in days to submit my all documents and fee?” Is it 30 days or 60 days?
Regards,
Vinay
HI Bob,
I received my EOI invitation last month, however I just found out that I wrongly entered the start and end date for my position as Deputy Manager, although it does not affect my points. In addition to it I didn’t mentioned my trainee engineer experience in EOI and now my pay slips indicating trainee engineer experience. Pleas help what should I do. Whether wait for next EOI or provide actual details in visa application
Hi Bob, I am training and development professional and applied for 190 PR EOI on 4 Jan 2017 and State Sponsorship to NT on 11 March 2017. I am having 70 points. Please suggest as hiw much time NT migration team takes to accept my state sponsorship and invite me to apply for VISA.
I am also same like you applied before one year but still no response
Tell me more about your PR application
Im very disappointed with your no response Bob. Its been many days I posted my query and was waiting eagerly for your response but you disappointed me. I was deeply interested looking at your useful responses to below posted queries.
Hi Bob, Im eagerly waiting for your response.
Ashish The whole reason no one including Bob (sorry I am guessing Bob and should not be speaking for you I appreciate) or any other contributor has answered is your question is, its pretty daft asking folk with no control over the answer . Why dont you ask the people you applied to for a time frame or research it on the net. I think even when you applied it tells you. No one on here has the figures you look for. there may be skills to asses and other things to do they dont just take your word you have 70 points They may never call you forward, the state has to decide they want you not you decide you want the state . Have some patience and I am sure things will work out.
Hi Mark, Thanks for your response. I have already send emails to NT migration team to enquire about status of my State Sponsorship application. I read most of the details available on the government website regarding the same but nowhere I found the processing time of state sponsorship applications. I also read about monthly number of invitations issued by all states and territories where I found that Number of visa invitations issued by NT are very less as compared to other states hence I am bit tensed about my application. I have a question as why NT accepts very less visa invitations. I am keeping my patience. Please pray for me. 🙂
The reason NT accept or invite far less is they dont need as many people as the rest of Australia I think the population of NT as a whole is around 1% of the whole population of Australia compared to NSW and VIC at around 25 % minimum each. So your applying ti what is perhaps the least inviting sponsor state in Australia That’s maybe the reason even they dont have the figures for you. You just have to wait I guess but it could be a wait bearing in mind what they sponsor. if there is 4 people in front of you or with higher points all can affect I guess
And Ashish, if you’re still wondering why you didn’t get a response from me apart from, as Mark has suggested, it being an impossible question to answer, then I suggest you take a look at the explanation under the heading above of ‘Comments: Please read…’ and in particular the bit in bold where it says ‘ I will not be able to answer any questions.’
I understood Mark. Thanks.
Hi Ashish, any news from NT sponsorship?
I’m hesitating toward my experience level (years to be counted).
My work history for past years are:
– External Auditor Feb 2009 to May 2012: 3 years 4 months
– Finance & Accounting Manager (many common tasks of financial and managerial accountant) May 2012 to Feb 2015: 2 years 10 months
– Internal Control Manager (very similar to internal auditor) Feb 2015 to present: 2 years 2 months
Therefore, I have more than 8 years of experience.
I want to apply nominating my External Auditor in the application or what? Do I count only the 3 years 4 months or do I count the full 8 years experience?
I’m really hesitating toward this point and wondering how do I calculate my total years of experience of my selected occupation.
Thanks a lot for your help
Hi W, I have a similar issue. Did you find a solution? Would you be able to help?
Hello,
I have got different responses. I guess the best is to assess our experience through the assessing authority. They should give the clear answer.
I’m going to assess by this month.
Plz tell how much time it takes for a state sponsered in EOI
Hello, I am going to submit EOI with 60 points for 189 and 190 visa, i am hoping to get state nomination which shall help my application leap to 65 points.
Please can you let me know if i don’t receive state nomination then my application will follow the normal route of 190 visa and will be in a queue, this is essential to know as i am going to complete 8 years work exp after the skill assessment met date, so this will give me 5 more points.
so plan is apply for state sponsorship and if i am selected then i can go through 189 and 190 visa process or else my application remains in queue and i need to apply for 190 visa when my circumstance change.
Thanks in advance.
Hi guys. I have submitted my eoi which was accepted. But in my confirmation, and skills select account I cannot find the number of points I was awarded. How do I find out?
Hi Alison I am just pitching in as Bob has moved house recently and the phone company here have made a mess of his internet connection… I have to be honest though and say I dont know the answer to your question. however I believe that once you have calculated your points hopefully totalling over 60 it s then looked at and assessed to see if those 60 are valid… I used an agent so never bothered with all this bit… I am hoping unless you have found them some one else will pop in and answer
HI Guysk,
I am pretty much stress as I got refusal in 186 visa last week . Now I don’t know after going to MRT will it turn positive after 12 months waiting?
What are the other options. I have completed 3 years with same employer under 457 visa as a project administrator. My ielts are 5 each.
What are the options for me> Can I go for EOI?
Currently only nomination got refuse not the visa application.
please advise.
You need a MARA agent to look at this for you as its stated in the orange boxes above, folk cant just gyve you advice like this. Im not saying MARA agent will solve the problem but they are far better qualified than anyone on here
Hi Bob,
Thanks for all the wonderful comments…. please provide your valuable suggestions in my case…
While filling EOI it is asking for dates while filling the occupation. In my case my overseas exp as per ACS after may 2012 is equivalent so
05/10 to 08/13 –that is 3.3 years
11/13 to 09/15 — 1.10 years.
In the above details as per my calculation it is equal to 3 years. But in eoi when I give my dates after may 2012 that is
01/06/2012 to 06/08/2013
22/11/2013 to 13/09/2015
It does not give the 5 points on overseas experience. But if I include month of may it does accepts….please advice.
Hi Bob,
I submitted Doing on September 22 2016 for 261311 code with 60 + 5 SS For NSW Visa 190, till now I didn’t get any invite. Maximum how many weeks it can take for invitations? Could you plz let me know
Hi Bob
I am applying for 190 Visa under skill set 225112 VETASSESS- Market Research Analyst from India.
Is the 225112 still active or its closed by all states. If I need to apply under it should I wait till July 2017 for the list to get revised. I already submitted my application to VETASSESS for verification..
I have received an invitation to apply for a 190 visa. On my expression of interest form , I stated that i was engaged. On my request for state nomination form, there was no room to state that and since i didn’t have a spouse , i stated that i wouldn’t be travelling with spouse. I will be getting married in 4 weeks and so my question is this. may i include my spouse on the DIBP application ?
hi victor hope all is well,
I just wanna ask after how long you got ITA…..
I nominated an occupation (geophysicist) that has been removed from Victoria’s State occupation list with effect from December 31. However, I put in my request for state nomination (5 points required from nomination to make minimum points) before December 31. Will my request be considered?
Also, I received an email from the state of Western Australia asking me to apply for state nomination. However, this occupation (Geophysicist) requires a job offer as a condition for state nomination – which I do not currently have. what do I do?
Thanks for the advice.
Victor

Hi Sir,
I’ve 9 years of experience as System Administrator in a college and I take care of all the computer machines and IT network in this college. I guess, I am falling under IT jobs. Can I apply for 189 as ‘System Analyst’ and which body would check my credenitials..ACS or any other body.
Kindly response.
Hi
I have submitted my eoi April 2016 as accountant with 65 points. I did not get any invitation yet. Recently I have completed professional year and now I have 70 points. Can I update new points to my old eoi or do I need to submit a new eoi? If I updated old eoi from 65 to 70 will it count as 9 months old application? Or it will count as a new application? I have only 2 months visa left.
Hi bob, great blog and some fantastic information. My wife is applying for a 189 (she is a registered mental health nurse) but she only did a diploma and is not finishing tipping this up to a full degree (she finished in April) would we be right in thinking we cannot apply for an EOI through skill select until she has the qualification in her hand?? I believe the criteria hanged a couple of years ago which we read on your blog too. Obviously we don’t want to start the EOI in case we get invited and don’t yet have the paperwork. Sorry this may seem a simple question but it’s quite a lot to understand. Thanks
Apologies for the typo’s
She is topping up her degree and finishes in April 2017
And the criteria changed a couple of wars back I believe
Ha ha, I love the typo corrections followed by ‘the criteria changed a couple of wars back…’; made me laugh out loud 🙂
Anyway, I’m afraid I can’t help you with your question even if it does seem simple, I’m just not allowed to do so. Please read my important messages at the foot of the above article. Good luck though, Bob
Ah ok thanks anyway for your speedy response.
Has she got registration with AHPRA as Registered Nurse? If not, that is the first step in the process. once registered, she has to get her skill assessed under Mental Health Nurse code with ANMAC.. Then only she can fill EOI.
If she is already a RN in UK, Newzealand, Canada, Ireland or USA (Qualification also must be gained form there). She can apply directly for ANMAC and then EOI.
I hope this helps
Hi, thanks very much, my wife is looking at this but we weren’t sure what point in the process. This is useful info thanks for your reply.

Hi Bob
I applied EOI in October for the ANZSCO CODE 242111 (university lecturer) (Special condition applied ) (high point criteria) for South Australia for visa subclass 489 with points 80 including state sponsorship points and got invitation in November 15 ,2016 . And now a case officer has asked me to submit documents till 18 Jan 2017.
But now I also quality for 190 visa with 80 points including state sponsorship points for SA with my partner’s skill points (5 points)
Now can I update my EOI for 190
And is there any chances of getting invitation for 190 parallel to processing of 489
Thank you for your valuable time
Try and speak to your case officer but generally the less confusing you make it the better I would imagine E.g to introduce another element will add to confusion…
Hi Bob,
I have submitted my EOI last year, till now haven’t received any invitation. I have included my partner’s skill also in my EOI to gain more points.
Now my question is can my husband go ahead and submit a new EOI for him?
he is already in my EOI, is that ok?
If it is more than 6 months, it generally means that you are not having enough points to warrant an invitation.
If your partner has more experience and is getting a higher point score, I would recommend him/her being the main applicant.
Thank you for your reply.
We have started the process for my husband.
He got a positive skill assessment but what happened is he was assessed for less years (2.8) out of his 10 years experience, can we log EOI for this 10 years of experience or what to do. kindly help!
Hi, Bob, i read all your suggestions and discussions, they are really valuable. i have applied for EOI on 2 October 2016. I have 65 points for 189 visas and also applied for 190 and 489. Ccould you please give me any idea how long does it takes to get an invitation.
Thanks
Nelly
Invitations are given every 2 weeks
Thanks Bob & Gang… i finally got my PR granted on 2.11.16! ♡♡ good luck everyone!
Congrats Vindu, I do hope it all goes well. Cheers, Bob

Hi
I am a 33 years old Chartered Accountant, Qualified ACCA, with 10 years of relevant experience in industry and 4 years of training at one of the Big4 firms. I got 8+ score in all categories of IELTS academic, except writing (7.5 unfortunately). I haven’t applied for assessment of my education and work experience so far. As per my own calculations, I have 65 points only, which are not good enough to apply for the General accountant category. They say, you need to have 70 points in order to get an invitation. Now my question is, should I just submit my documents to CPA for assessment and retake IELTS or PTE to improve my score? or I try to find a sponsor in Australia and receive 5 more points? A friend of mine owns a real estate business in Australia and is willing to sponsor me, but I don’t know what kind of a business can be your legal sponsor. Any business or it has to be owned by the state or something? kindly help me choose the best option before they remove this category from SOL.
thanking in anticipation.
I had troubles with IELTS just like you and my advice is do take the PTE. It’s a super duper easy exam, which only requires practice and some tips to ace. I was at 7.5 writing for IELTS and that was ages ago, and I still got perfect score for PTE (all band) so believe me you can do it.
Yes, quite a few people are a fan of PTE. If you check out some of the comments on my page about How to Pass IELTS you will see what they have to say about it. If anyone is struggling with IELTS, PTE is certainly worth giving a try.
Hi Bob!
LOVE your site! My husband and I are looking to move to Brisbane from the US. He is looking into job positions and we are hoping to come with a company sponsorship. In this case, do you know if he would he still need to fill out the EOI? Thanks! Again, thanks for all this great info in one place. It’s quite an undertaking to do all the research and figure this all out on our own, so I’m so glad I found your site (even more daunting, I think when considering our kids. We have 3!)
-Erin
I’m afraid that’s one of those questions I can’t answer for you Erin, please check out the special notices above. Glad to hear you love my website though 🙂 cheers, Bob
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly! I will look into contacting a MARA to get some guidance!
