As you probably know, I’ve written a lot about whale watching. If it is possible to aspire to being good at whale watching, so far, I haven’t.
If there were a whale watching competition, I wouldn’t qualify for the finals; it’s even possible I could come last.
But maybe my “watching” talents lie elsewhere. Let’s face it, lots of people have seen whales, but I don’t think many people have seen what I saw when I did go whale watching.
My Flying Fish Sighting
I’m not sure how rare flying fish are, but I think they’re quite rare. They are certainly smaller than whales, so therefore, I imagine, harder to spot.
But I spotted one! So did Elizabeth, you can hear her excitement on my upcoming film.
Not only would it be rare to spot a flying fish, but I suspect even rarer to be holding a video camera in your hand at the time AND have it running.
I did!
To see if anybody else did, I searched for “flying fish” on YouTube. I could only see two videos about the sort of flying fish I captured, and one of them was narrated by David Attenborough!
No such thing as flying fish?
When I finished making this film the other day, I showed it to a friend of mine who was around with her two young girls. “Hey girls” I said, “do you want to see a film of a flying fish?”
My friend explained to us all that there was no such thing as a flying fish.
Oh yes there is…..
A Flying Fish Film by BobinOz
It’s a short film, under a minute. But still enough time to include special slow motion and zoom effects for those may have thought it was me cynically throwing a stick. Oh, best viewed in hi-def by clicking on the square thingy, bottom right…….
My friend and I seen a big school of them flying off tweed heads qld near 9mile reef yesterday,
They looked almost fluerecent blue…was certainly a sight to see.
Wow! That must’ve been quite a sight. I got excited enough just seeing one!
Hey Bob – What do flying fishes live on? And where can I get some? Did you see the speed it was going? I didn’t see it until you slowed it right down 🙂 Nice video mate.
Thanks TJ!
My bet is they live on smaller fish, I think that’s how it works. I know they fly to get away from the bigger fish who want to eat them. It’s tough in the ocean! This one was doing about 8 knots. Not worth getting unless you have a really big fish tank, they need a good run up before they can fly!
Cheers
Bob
