Travelling through Airlie Beach: What I Missed

My road trip continues. Yesterday evening I arrived at Airlie Beach as I continued to meander my way towards Cairns. Tomorrow morning I will be leaving Airlie Beach to head off to Townsville. My visit here is quite short, so there are a couple of things I definitely won’t be able to do for different reasons.

Firstly, I won’t be able to go to the Whitsunday Reef Festival.

festivalThe reason I can’t go is quite simple; it doesn’t start until August 5. So I’ve got here way too early. That’s a shame, because I’m sure Airlie Beach would have been even more fun with this festival going on.

The festival runs for 10 days and is in its 16th year. The organisers themselves describe the event as ‘a delicious combination of family fun, community events, all-night celebrations, food, fashion, fireworks and some of the biggest street parties north of Mackay.

If you’re thinking of visiting Airlie Beach sometime soon, then I’d be sure to go between 5–14 August if you can to enjoy the cracking street entertainment. To find out more about this festival, please visit whitsundayreeffestival.com.au.

Secondly, I won’t be checking out Whitehaven Beach. This is a great shame, because if there is one ‘must do” when visiting Airlie Beach, it would surely be to visit Whitehaven Beach, which is on Whitsunday Island.

Whitsunday Island is just one island of 74 islands that are all part of the Whitsunday Islands National Park. These stunning islands are all off of the Queensland coast close to Airlie Beach.

So why am I not going to see these amazing islands?

To do these islands justice, you really need a full day trip and I am only here for one full day. If I’d chosen to do the Whitsunday’s, I wouldn’t really have got to see anything else.

I could have done a helicopter trip in just 25 minutes, but I’ve done that sort of thing before with my family when we flew over Moreton Island. So I decided to give these islands a miss this time, but I’m not too sad about that. I know I will definitely return one day and this is something I would love to do with my family.

If I had done the helicopter thing though, I’m sure I would have been able to knock together a video for you, something like this…

Well, maybe my video wouldn’t have been quite as good as that, so my thanks to hdxposure for the great video.

Crikey, that would be a very long video, I think I would send everybody watching it to sleep!

Besides, I don’t think YouTube accept videos 20 hours long 🙂

I’m with you on the idea though, and I may put together an edited video of some of the highlights of the journey.

I didn’t mean the whole trip, just things like meeting and passing road trains [that’s just one example]
