Television Award Ceremonies: Britain and Australia Compared

Well, why not? I’ve compared prices, the weather, houses, I’ve even compared the Grand Canyon and Uluru. I think it’s about time I compared television award ceremonies, don’t you?

After all, I think it’s fair to say that most of us, whichever country we live in, do like watching the telly now and then.

And of course, today is Friday, I always like to put up a YouTube video or two at the end of the week and this will give us a chance to look at a couple of ‘acceptance speeches’ and compare red carpets.

BAFTAs and Logies

The BAFTAs; BAFTA stands for British Academy of Film and Television Arts and each year, since 1955, they have hosted the British Academy Television Awards. This year’s event was in February and took place in the very posh Royal Opera House in Covent Garden.

So, that’s Britain’s TV awards show, now let’s look at Australia.

The Logies; Logies doesn’t stand for anything whatsoever. When the awards first started back in 1959, they were just called the “TV Stars of the Year”. Then somebody suggested they be called the Logie Awards, after John Logie Baird, who invented the television.

The natural progression, being as this is Australia, was to shorten that further to the Logies. Those Logies took place here in Melbourne this week in the studios of Channel Nine.

There, now you know what the Logies are, thanks to my extensive knowledge on the subject which I picked up 10 minutes ago after reading this page on popsugar.

And the winner is…

Time for some backslapping acceptance speeches, or maybe not. First up is the winner for the Most Outstanding Comedy in Australia According to the Logies 2016…

For some people, the biggest concern when giving an acceptance speech is making sure they don’t miss anybody out. Let’s see how the winner of the BAFTAs 2016 category of Male Performance in a Comedy Programme goes with that one…

The red carpet

Part of the fun of these awards ceremonies is, apparently, checking out what people are wearing. Nobody has ever asked me “who are you wearing?” and for good reason. The answer would be Target or Kmart.

Let’s spend a few minutes on the red carpet at the BAFTAs. I think my Australian readers will be very amused by how many times there is mention of the sun being out in such a short video…

And finally, this is a much longer look at what people were wearing at the Logies, in fact it’s so long it may actually be the first video I’ve posted on my website that I haven’t watched all the way through. Maybe I’ll watch it later; but probably not.

This one truly is for fashionistas and I’m definitely not one of those…

That’s me done, I’m off to watch the telly.

Is it more common to call it TV or Telly, for local Australian?

I’m not sure, but I think television, TV and telly are all used in equal measures.
