Some of you may have noticed that there was no post on either Friday of last week or Monday of this. That, you won’t be surprised to hear, was down to the Easter break.
So what’s Easter like in Australia?
Well, a few years ago we went spent Easter at the Festival of Sails, Redcliffe, in Moreton Bay. This year though we went to Shorncliffe, which is also in Moreton Bay, for the…
Shorncliffe has a pier, it’s Brisbane’s largest timber pier. It’s just been renovated by what was known as the ‘Shorncliffe Pier Renewal Project’. The grand opening of this new rejuvenated pier, the ‘Official Ribbon Cutting’, took place at 9:30 on this very Good Friday morning.
Well, we missed that, but we did walk to the end of Shorncliffe Pier after that opening…
From the end of the pier you can clearly see the sand dunes of Tangalooma on Moreton Island straight ahead of you…
Well, maybe not so clearly in that photograph, but if I zoom in you can see the dunes…
And if you looked to the left, or north as it is also called in this particular case, you can just about see the Houghton Highway, the bridge that takes you across Bramble Bay towards Redcliffe…
Shorncliffe Pier would have also been the perfect place to witness the start of the 68th Brisbane to Gladstone Monohull Yacht Race which started at 11 AM from Moreton Bay.
But we missed that as well. We arrived at about 12 noon, just in time to see the Easter Bunny…
There was plenty going on at the Bluewater Festival, including market stalls, fun on the beach, food stalls, fairground rides and live music…
But once we’d done with all that, we were hungry and we needed a barbecue to cook our stuff. So we headed about 5 or 10 minutes up the road to Arthur Davis Park in Sandgate…
Where we quickly found a vacant barbecue…
And literary found thousands of crabs swimming through the shallow puddles and they all looked like this…
Could these be baby blue swimmer crabs? It’s just a hunch, on account that it looks like a crab and it is a bit blue, but I really don’t know.
I was drawn by the sound of live music, but where was it coming from? Ah, could it be this house…
I was in Redcliffe on Good Friday… sadly, I’m back in the uk 🙁
That’s a very sad face you have Lee, hope you cheer up soon, like this 🙂
Waouh pretty cool easter break !
Where I live in Quebec Canada, We just have about 1 meter snow all around my house. You can be sure that the eggs hunt was not outside !
Well, our egg hunts need to be really quick before the chocolate melts 🙂
Yes, it was a very enjoyable Easter break, yours would have been fun as well except, I suspect, you see quite a bit of snow throughout the year.
Hi Bob,
Can you tell me if Australian customs will allow me to import my home contents if packed in large rubbermaid plastic boxes please?
Thank you so much
Mia
I don’t see why not, but you should check this with your removal company, they will know.
Hi Bob,
It is a soldier crab. They live in large groups on mudflats. They are really cool and fun to watch!
Ah, thank you for that Jill, I was pretty sure it wasn’t a blue swimmer crab, I Googled images of those online and they grow pretty big. Soldier crab makes sense, given that there were thousands of them 🙂
Thanks for helping me out here, it was bugging me.
