Yes, today I’ve got a video that nobody wants to see, not even me. In fact I have even more reason not to want to see it, because I live in Brisbane. It was in a Brisbane suburban back garden that Gigantor was found.
What is Gigantor?
Here are some clues.
- Normally these things are around 700 mm to a metre long, this one is 2 metres long
- Normally these things weigh up to 1 kg, this one is 2 kilos
- Normally these things deliver around 12 mm of venom, this one can deliver up to 35 mils
Do you know what it is yet?
Of course, it’s an eastern brown snake, but not the one in the picture above.
Gigantor is bigger. Much bigger.
In fact Gigantor is possibly the biggest eastern brown snake in the world. Well, it’s the biggest one that has been caught to date, but there will be other ones just as big out there in other suburban back gardens. Maybe there’s one even bigger.
So the last thing we want to do is watch this video…
Around 2000 to 3000 people a year get bitten by snakes in Australia, the majority of them (around three quarters) by eastern browns. They are the second deadliest snake in Australia behind the Inland Taipan. Fortunately, fatalities are relatively rare, usually only one or two people a year thanks to antivenom.
Gigantor though, well he’s a snake that will be saving lives from now on. He has been relocated to the Australian Reptile Park and his massive venom yield will be used to make antivenom; lots of it I would think.
