Australia’s Santa Claus; What’s He Like?

That’s a stupid question really, isn’t it? We all know there is only one Santa Claus and the poor man has a lot of presents to deliver on Christmas Eve. Never mind all the houses he has to visit, what about all those countries?

He must get ‘cream crackered’ as we would say in England.

Tired SantaIt is fair to say though that Santa Claus does act very differently here in Australia than he does when in the UK. Understandable really, our climates are completely opposite at the time when he does most of his work.

That difference can be seen quite clearly in our country’s respective festive advertising which I spoke about in my post called Christmas Adverts on TV: Australia and UK Compared.

When I was a kid living in England, we used to leave out a wee nip of whiskey for Santa. Let’s face it, we all know he likes a bit of a drink and a stiff short is perfect in the UK for those wintry chilly nights.

Doesn’t work in Australia though.

Which brings me back to my question. You see, Australian Santa wears shorts, not longjohns, he likes going to the beach, not snowy rooftops and he would rather wear sunnies than thermal underwear. He doesn’t drink whiskey in Australia, he would prefer something a little more refreshing as you will see very soon.

Time for another Australian singalong

Yes, it’s so close to Christmas that it’s time to burst into song again. We’ve done this when it’s got close to Christmas several times in the past and this year I’ve unearthed another classic.

I don’t know who Frank Jones is, but he had a Christmas show on Channel 7 and in 1974 this video appeared on it. Don’t be too put off by the thumbnail image, this is a family blog and I do not allow any bad language or nudity here.

So this video is suitable for all the family…… although I would strongly advise against showing it to any of your kids who still enjoy sitting on Santa’s knee in the shopping mall and telling him what they want for Christmas.

There’s plenty of time for them to find out what Australian Santa is really like, so let’s not rush it. But you though, I think you’re ready now aren’t you? Meet Australia’s Santa Claus…

I’ve been here eight years, I still have no idea. Maybe I should set up surveillance cameras?

A tad off-topic, but I remember my wife’s nieces saying the following to their mother:

“Our auntie gets us Christmas presents, our uncle does too, and so do grandma and granddad, and Santa obviously… mum, why don’t you and dad get us Christmas presents?”

Yes, Christmas is so cruel isn’t it? Ask parents pay out all the money and Santa gets all the credit. No wonder we eat and drink too much, got to have something in it for us 🙂
