Hi Five! A New Milestone in Australia

Since we moved here to Australia, we’ve had several important milestones. I thought I would try and list the top five. In typical ‘pop pickers’ fashion, let’s count this down in reverse.

In at number five…

On a Monday evening in October 2009 after having lived here for almost 2 years, something very strange happened to me. For the first time in my life I felt happy when it rained. I wrote about it in my post…

And at number four…

This is a strange “milestone”, but it does make fourth position simply because I find this statistic so amazing. Something happened to me for the first time for a long time since moving to Australia. This same event would have happened three or four times a year back in England, but it took nearly 4 years before it happened to me at all here. And it hasn’t happened much since either. What is it? Find out here…

High at number three…

Surviving for 4 years living in Australia as a permanent resident was super significant; it meant we were now in a position to apply for Australian citizenship. But of course, we would have to pass our citizenship tests first…

Clinching number two…

This particular milestone was probably the most important for us, and it came very early in our lives here in Australia; about three months and 20 days into our lives here in Australia, to be precise.

Our first few months here had been quite difficult for us for many reasons, which you can read about in the following link. The milestone was actually Elizabeth’s fourth birthday and her birthday party.

But it wasn’t a milestone just because it was her birthday, it was because, well, you can read all about it here…

At top spot: number one…

It just has to be the day we became Australian citizens, it was a really proud day for us all. Even Elizabeth fully understood the importance of the occasion and actually got quite emotional. The story on that one is at…

Our Australian Citizenship Ceremony and The Citizenship Pledge

Another milestone

So why have I chosen today to write about the top five milestones of our lives here in Australia so far? Well, because today is also a very significant milestone.

It was five years ago to this very day that we boarded an airplane on a one-way ticket from Heathrow Airport to Brisbane Airport. I wrote about that in my post…

Moving to Australia – Part Fourteen

5th AnniversaryNow that I have been here five years and now that I am an Australian citizen, do I see Australia any differently from those early “honeymoon period” days? Do I have any regrets about the move? Have I ever looked back?

Well, I think you know the answer to that one as I couldn’t even be bothered to go back to England for a holiday when Mrs Bobinoz and Elizabeth went last month.

I’m sure there isn’t a country in the world though, where there isn’t something to moan about, and my posts on this website haven’t all been about the ‘living the dream’ lifestyle. That’s why I have a category called Australia’s Bad Things, so that I can talk about the politicians, coal seam gas, Telstra, carbon tax and Australian weeds, to name but a few.

Apparently, whingeing is what us Poms do best, but you won’t find me moaning too much about Australia, I still love it here. For the record, so do Mrs Bobinoz and Elizabeth. So tonight we are celebrating our first five years of life in Australia and we’re looking forward to many, many more years in this country.

High five indeed!

That’s not bad, considering I didn’t blog during year one, you’ve been here since the beginning. Thanks Kaven, hope you continue through years 6, 7, 8…

    Hi Bob,
Congratulations on your fifth anniversary in Oz.
I have just come back from visiting Brisbane, Perth and Melbourne. I can now see why you like Brisbane.

Thanks Joel and yes, Brisbane does have a few good things going for it. Cheers!
