Hi Bob, me and my wife’s occupations are both on the skills shortage list (chemical plant operator and developmental disability nurse respectively).
However when I look on seek or indeed I struggle to find jobs for those. Its tricky for us as the finances would need to make sense immediately as we have a young family.
Thanks, Dan.
It’s difficult for me to give you any meaningful advice here. As I’m sure you will appreciate, the job market in this Covid 19 climate is very unstable. Unemployment is very high at the moment, due to forced closures/downturn of some businesses, and there’s just no way of knowing what the future holds.
If you are not able to secure work until after you get here, which is almost certainly the case as it’s very difficult to get a job offer from outside of the country, then I think it would be extremely risky to come here at this time with your young family. At this very moment in time, as I write this, I don’t even think it is possible to come here as our borders are closed due to Covid, unless you can successfully apply for an exemption.
Thanks for the reply. Yes Covid has thrown quite the spanner in the works. I was mainly looking as the salary for my job on joboutlook looks far too good to be true ($3kp/w)!
Do you know if the chemical industry is scattered fairly evenly all around the country or are there pockets gathered in certain areas? I’ve had some difficulty trying to find that out. The move was probably a couple of years away anyway even before covid, knowing a location would mean we could have a holiday over there before we make any decisions.
Thanks again, Dan.
$3K per week wouldn’t be unusual for somebody highly qualified and skilled in the chemistry industry, so what you’re seeing on that site could well be true. If it were me, I’d be inclined to start making contact with any company you can find in Australia who you could do a good job for, and get some feedback.
I’d be guessing as to whether there was a certain area in Australia where the chemical industry is more prevalent, but as I’m not feeling particularly lucky at the moment, I won’t bother 🙂
Definitely a good idea though, if you get the opportunity, to take a holiday over here in and around the kinds of places where you might find work.
Good luck with it, I hope it works out well for you and your family.

Hello Bob,
I am from Saudi Arabia and I have a bachelor degree in industrial engineering with almost 2 yrs of professional experience, and trying to get a job in Australia any idea how to get a sponsorship to work there??
It’s very difficult, I think you would need to persevere and have a bit of luck. My page Getting a Job or a Sponsorship might help you further.
Hi, my partner has been a Print Finisher for 22 years and is nearly 53. I understand that this job is in the top 20 required list in Australia. Will his age be an issue or will he be able to find a sponsor do you think and if so any ideas please.
Yes, I think his age could be a problem, certainly if you are hoping that it would lead to some kind of permanent visa to stay here in Australia. You would need to speak to a MARA migration agent about that side of things though, they are the ones that know all the rules.
If you just want to come here for a few years though on a temporary visa, then it is certainly worth your partner trying to find a sponsorship, somebody might well want to get the benefit of his many years experience in the trade.

Hey bob.
I’m looking to find uk candidates (carpenters in particular) who are looking to come to Australia in a working holiday visa and hire them before they arrive.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Dave Ascott.

Yes, check out my page about Working Holiday Visas and somewhere on there you will find a link to a backpackers job board where you can post your listing.
There are a few of these kinds of things around, but some of them are a bit dodgy, they simply scam people for registration fees, but this one seemed to be okay. Hope that helps, cheers, Bob
