Our ‘Life in Australia’ Videos – Year by Year

My wife Karen and I, along with our daughter Elizabeth who was just 3 years old at the time, arrived in Australia from the UK to live here permanently in November 2007.

Since then, every year for the first 10 years I have made a short video of our highlights. Click on any of the video images below to open a new page where you will be able to read a short write-up about that year, and also watch the video.

If you don’t want to bother with any of that reading stuff, and you just want one page with all 10 videos waiting for you to click play, visit my page The Yearly Videos.

Testimonials:

I will start with my favourite email so far, received in July 2017:

Dear Bob,

Please excuse the private email but I really just very shortly and sweetly would like to thank you for your inspiration!

In 2013 I read your blog.
In 2014 I bought a ticket.
In 2015 I got on a plane.
In 2016 I busted my balls in a sales job.
In 2017 I was given my own office in my favourite place, HERE in Brisbane and all being well over the next few months, will be sponsored and on my way to staying here forever.

I found a country I love, a job I love and a woman I love ALL because I stumbled across your website in an angry moment back in 2013… Brisbane? Where the hell is Brisbane…

Thank you for helping change the mind and spirit of an otherwise (at the time,) angry spoilt 26 year old from Hertfordshire.

I hope maybe one day I can buy you a beer to say thank you!

Charlie

Dear Bobinoz, Mrs Bobinoz and Elizabeth,

Bob; your posts and blogs and advice and tips and comparisons and costings are all invaluable to us, they fill us with eternal hope  …………. Thank you, thank you, thank you. . . . . infact I cant say enough thanks. (however if you could fix us up a couple of residency visas that’d be the best thing you could pass on to us)
😉

Cheers all

Wayne + Katie.

Subject: Thanks!
Just wanted to say hi and thanks Bob! Although I am not from the UK, but just a “yank”, I am thoroughly enjoying your site. Your site has been a comfort, source of info and comic relief for me. I’m very excited about the move but have all the same fears you’ve had to go through!  Keep writing!

Since I discovered your posts on the web you looked to me invigorating, made me feel good, you are realistic, this is so true each moment, your tales are like if I HAVE BEEN THERE MYSELF! , because I would have considered, pondered, on all the stuff, good and bad, I feel you are like my eyes in my face and my eyes of my soul too. Also you make me smile, chuckle and laugh a lot. I imagine it would be real treat to meet you some day. Thanks to be around!

Send a bear hug from Mexico. Elena

Bob, you are a god.  Your blog really is the most helpful thing I have found regarding my big move.  THANK YOU!!!! I wish the site were easier to search.  You have the answers to all of my questions, if I rootle around enough to find them (or rather lazily ask you in an email).

Thank you for your help.  It is really appreciated.

Angel

Hi Bob
I love your website – it has been a fantastic source of inspiration and help as we start to plan our move. I am an economist and yours is the only sensible cost of living comparisons I’ve ever seen!
Many thanks

Your site is great mate!
I just recently moved to London and it’s quite cool looking back at someone who has done the opposite. I’m loving your journal thus far and all of your comparisons. You’re a funny dude!
Keep it up,
Rock on.
Dane.

I just stumbled across your website and I wanted to thank you for the work you’re doing. I’m a Venezuelan who lived in the USA from 1997-2002, then in Greece from 2002-today, and now I’m moving to Adelaide, SA, in March. Needless to say, it’s been a pain in the neck to find logical and easy-to-understand cost-of-living statistics.
That was until I landed here.

Thank you.
Alex

Just wanted to say I enjoy your blog. I’m currently in ‘the idea’ phase of migrating to Australia, Brisbane in particular. ……Its really  great being able to read someone else story as it puts the whole  process into a more human perspective compared to the more technical  nature of government/institution/company(agent) websites.
Keep writing and I’ll keep reading!
Kind regards,
Lucas

Hi Bob,
I’m very glad to have found your blog today, it’s very good! I’m in Ontario, Canada and have wanted to move to Australia for years, but am having trouble convincing my wife that it’s something she
could handle. Hopefully your blog and ebook help provide some quality ammo toward that goal, but even if not, they’ll be good reading I’m sure.

Thanks for the great info!
Scott

Bob, OUTSTANDING website!  ……..

Followed a friend’s link to your blog yesterday, and am enjoying it. As a longterm expat aussie, I’m actually reading with the eye on “do I want to go home?” “what is home anyway?”, “can I afford to go home?” and “what will I do with my cross-country skis?”. Enjoying your mix of intelligent comment, good writing and humour. And the slightly scary banner.

Cheers!

still be living in rainy England!!

Just wanted to say congrats on the site, your website is very informative and helped me make up my mind to make the big move down under.

I’ve had ‘the idea’! and am in the early stages of applying to migrate on a 176 visa, so fingers crossed!

Keep up the good work!

Cheers,

Ged

Subject: Moving to Australia for an American
Message/Query: Hi,

I hope that this email finds you in good spirits, certainly reading your blog has place me in very good spirits. This is more of a declarative statement more than a question, I just wanted to let you know a few things about me. First off, I am an American that was in the U.S. Navy for 10 years. I have been to many places while I was stationed in that part of the world. One of the places that I have never been is Australia and I plan on going for my birthday this year. But after reading your blog, I think that now more than ever I am convinced that I shall like to live there. .

……But I just wanted to let you know that your story has really inspired me and that is something that is very hard to do.

But not everybody is best pleased by my blog…..

Subject: Whinging Pom
Message/Query: The only thing worse than a Pom, is a Whinging Pom. Don’t like it here – then go back to where you belong.

My thanks to everyone, even Rup, for taking the time to write to me.

Cheers
