Getting a Job Sponsorship in Australia and Finding Work

Job Sponsorships

You're hiredWhether it is possible for you to get a job sponsorship or not in Australia is largely dependent upon your skills and qualifications.

I am quoting the Department of Immigration & Border Control (DIBP) from the page on their website specifically about the Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS)…….

Who is this visa for?

“This visa is for Australian employers who want to sponsor highly skilled workers for a permanent visa to work in their business. The employees can be either:

  • highly skilled workers from overseas
  • highly skilled temporary residents currently in Australia.

So, before you can even think about the possibility of getting a job sponsorship, you will need to have a skill and qualifications to match, so your first task is to take a look to see if your skill is on one of these skills lists.

Update: as at 19 April 2017, the Australian Government made significant changes to the skills lists, namely the:

  • Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) replaced the previous ‘Skilled Occupation List’ (SOL)
  • Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL) replaced the previous ‘Consolidated Sponsored Occupation List’ (CSOL)

Please visit the government’s website for more information.

The government’s skills lists

The following page contains a new combined listing of all eligible skills as well as the ANZSCO code and the assessing authorities.

(This link may change, if it no longer gives the information I suggest it does, please let me know in the comments so I can update it.)

Once on that page, you should see a paragraph about halfway down that starts with “A current list of eligible skilled occupations…” and ends with a link to a “Combined current list of eligible skilled occupations.”

Assuming your skill is on one of those lists, how do you then set about getting sponsored? Here are a few ideas:

  • Get yourself a professionally prepared Australian resume.
  • Not all vacancies are publicly advertised, so do some research on Australian companies that might be able to make use of your specific skill. Send them your professional resume direct.
  • Follow up with a telephone call to see if they have received it and at the same time, ask if sponsoring applicants from abroad is something their company would be likely to do.
  • If the company says yes, we would sponsor from abroad, but we have no vacancies at present, ask if you can stay in touch. If they say yes, contact them every three months.
  • Over time, you’ll build a network of people who you know in your trade. This increases your chances of something turning up.
  • Finally, if you get the chance to come out to Australia, line up meetings with these people if you can.

Working Holiday Visas

But if you are young and you qualify for a working holiday visa, you can visit Australia for 12 months (extendable to 24 months under certain conditions) and work. What better way to build on that networking?

Visit: Working Holiday for up to date information from the Australian Government, or my own WHV page for further details.

Of course, there’s also nothing to stop you searching for vacancies online and I have listed the best places to do that further below.

FAQ’s About Getting a Job or Finding Work

I get asked lots of questions about work here in Australia, some questions I get asked again and again. People usually tell me a little bit about their skills, qualifications and what it is they do, and then ask:

  • Will I get a job in Australia?
  • Would I get a sponsorship in Australia?
  • How much money will I earn in Australia?
  • Which city should I go to for the best opportunities for what I do?

So, what are the answers?

Will I get a job in Australia?

This is pretty much the same as the question “Would I get a sponsorship in Australia?” It’s a tough one, impossible to answer.

Nobody can really tell you whether or not you’d get a job in Australia, ultimately that’s down to you to impress a potential employer at an interview, whether that be face-to-face or by Skype or telephone. So it is an impossible question to answer.

It is true to say though that some skills are in more demand here than others, and on that basis if you have a skill that is highly desired in Australia, you would appear to have a better chance. I couldn’t tell you what that chance is though, I simply don’t keep up to date all the latest shortages on any of the skills lists.

I’ve already provided a link to those lists earlier in this article, so you can check for yourself to see if your skill is there. But even if your skill is on one of those lists, there is still no guarantee that you will find a job here.

I really do recommend those who have concerns in this area to talk with a MARA registered migration agent or a recruitment Specialist. My Visa Assessment Service does include a full skills lists search for those looking to come here on any of the General Skilled Migration visas.

How much money can I earn in Australia?

Good question.

If you want to know how much money you might earn here in Australia, that’s actually quite straightforward, please visit the following Australian Government’s website:

Simply search for your skill in their database and find out a huge amount of information, including average weekly earnings.

Which city should I go to for the best opportunities for what I do?

That only leaves one more question to answer, and that’s which city might be best for you given the skill you have. Again, impossible for me to answer, but I would suggest you search any or all of the below recommended online employment agencies for what you do, and simply see which cities or states come up with the most opportunities for what it is that you do.

  • Raveena Bhunjun June 16, 2019, 10:16 pm |

    Hello
I would like to know if the skills that I have is enough for me to try a job in Australia. I have approximately 3 years of experience as a financial analyst and 1 year as an auditor. My query is is whether I can get a job as an auditor.
    Thank you

    • BobinOz June 17, 2019, 5:19 pm |

Well, my MARA migration agent could tell you whether the skills you have are likely to good enough to help you get a visa to come and work here in Australia, but nobody would be able to tell you specifically whether you can get a job when you get here. That would be down to you on how well you perform at interview.

If you want to see if you might qualify for a visa, please go through my Visa Assessment Service.

    • Alan July 30, 2019, 2:57 am |

      Hi Bob

I have been offered a full time, permanent job, in a town called Normanton in Queensland, Australia.

It is an assistant managers role at a company my wife and I worked for in 2018 when we were on a WHV. But I do not believe the role comes under the skills migration list.

But I do not want to throw away such an incredible job offer and our dream of moving to Australia just because it is not on the list.

He has offered the job to me as it is a rural location and very hard to find people capable and loyal enough to do the job.

Do you know if this is possible and where I can start in order to accept this once in a life time offer and begin the process of starting a new life in Australia?

Would my potential employer have to sign up for a Labour Agreement in order for me to go there, or is there a visa I can apply for?

I look forward to hearing from you.

      thanks
      Alan.

      • BobinOz July 30, 2019, 7:10 pm |

Rural? Crikey, yes, that’s for sure. But then it sounds like you know that, I assume that’s where you were in 2018 with your wife?

Anyway, you’ve asked me questions about visas and eligibility, and I simply can’t answer those at all. Only MARA registered migration agents have the knowledge to help in these cases, all I can tell you with absolute certainty is that you will need a visa that will allow you to work in this country in order to accept this opportunity.

I’d get back to your potential employer if I were you and ask him how he can make this happen. Say you’d love to take him up on it, but ask him for help in getting the visa. Hopefully he can then speak to a MARA registered migration agent to see if there’s any way to make this happen.

        Good luck, Bob

  • Sam Shinn February 28, 2019, 4:00 am |

Hi Bob. Not too sure how to work this out, and as you’ve been there a few years thought you’d might shed some light on it. This is the average painter tradesmen salary at $1k a week.

How much tax would I pay on a $52k a year salary? As the current rates are $37,001 – $90,000

$3,572 plus 32.5c for each $1 over. With the tax rate set at 9.65 – 23.11%. Plus the 2% medicare.

Also, any updates on current employment rates? WA was bottom last time I looked, is this still the case?

Hope to hear from you. Regards, Sam

    • BobinOz March 1, 2019, 7:30 pm |

Well, you were almost there with your calculation, you just need to work out 32.5% on the $15,000 over the $37,000 a year you will be earning. So by my maths, that’s about $4875 plus your $3572 = $8447 or thereabouts in tax, then just add the 2% which is a separate thing.

If you Google “online Australian tax calculator”, there’s a few around, you can doublecheck.

I’ve heard that WA is getting better for jobs, but I’m not sure that’s overly reflected in the percentage figures.

  • Jake February 24, 2019, 7:29 pm |

I’m afraid my skills aren’t in high demand in Australia at the moment. Perhaps I will try to reskill…

How could i miss it!? 🙂
Will have a look, big thanks!

It’s called banner blindness, it’s a good thing, too many ads in this world. If we saw and read them all, we’d never get anything done 🙂

Hi I’m Jerry, 36 years old, from Philippines.
Please help me find any farm related jobs, I have 11 years employment experienced related in farming. Currently I am an agronomist in banana farm.
    Thanks.

    • Michael June 17, 2019, 9:03 am |

Hi Jerry…in Australia much of the farm work on the labor side of things for bananas and berries are done by a mix of local low skilled workers and backpackers on working holiday visas..sadly Filipinos don’t have access to that visa..so you would need to have formal skills and look for banana farms that are hiring skilled workers in permanent roles..some farms do hire in the horticultural and harvest production management type roles workers from overseas on sponsored visas. These types if roles will be advertised online..google will help
