Good informative site and helpful to anyone thinking of relocating to Australia although some of your correspondents do appear to see you as a guru on finding employment. I particularly enjoyed the discussion about Perth I lived there in the Seventies it was excruciatingly boring then but I stuck it out for a year, so good to hear things have improved there.
I now live in Newtown in Sydney been here since 1995 back then houses were cheap for Sydney, all changed now of course,houses in my street are renting for around $1000 week and regularly sell for one million plus
I agree totally with Abbi,Newtown is vibrant and tolerant close to Sydney Uni and RPA hospital if you can afford to live here you’ll never be bored so much culture and pretty much bogan free.

I do hope people don’t look on me as a job finding expert, being self-employed I haven’t been for an interview since 1993 and I’ve never been for one in this country. I do have an expert that can help, but in the end there’s only one person who can get the job and that’s the person going for the interview.
1995 would in a great time to buy a house in Sydney, it’s certainly a lot tougher these days. But then I suppose that applies to a lot of cities around the world. Was Perth really there in the 70s? 🙂

Yes Perth was still there in the Seventies but very much the country town feel then.
I lived in Sorrento then,now called Hillarys I believe I worked the construction of what was then the new part of the Charles Gairdner Hospital.
I arrived in Australia from Derby courtesy of the Ten Pound scheme which some of your visitors may be familiar with.
Anyway back to the present day Sydney is an expensive town no doubt. I think the best guide for anyone contemplating moving here is do lots of research as you have advised.
A general rule is the further West or South West from the city center the more affordable property becomes but not always so,lots of research required.
Areas like Auburn, Lakemba, Lidcombe, have large migrant populations so really it depends where you feel comfortable.
All those suburbs I mentioned have a rail station and are part of the suburban network, if you like the beach you could always check out Cronulla in the Sutherland Shire a lot more expensive but very family friendly and sporty.
Of course if you have serious aspirations then the Eastern Suburbs think Bondi, Paddington, Coogee, where house prices are in the millions.
I suspect Brisbane, where I am, was very much like Perth back in the 70s, nothing more than the big country town. I think both places have come on a good deal since then. Well, you would have seen the changes yourself, being a ten pounder.
Thanks for the sound advice about Sydney, if I had a couple of million dollars to spend on a house I’d probably buy one in North Shore I reckon. I don’t have to think about it too hard though, I don’t have a couple of million pounds to spend on house 🙂

I am planning to study in sydney. And I am having hard time on deciding which suburban to choose from. My college is in the heart of sydney but it seems the rent is skyhigh there.. Could you suggest me a good suburban to live in?
Rents in inner Sydney would be high, I suspect you would need to find somewhere a bit further out of town. You may be better off looking at some of the comments made in my main page about Sydney, lots of talk about the suburbs there.
I am qualified professional Cocktail bartender with 5 years experience i have worked on land and on a cruise line. i have also studied bartending at shaker bar school would i be able to qualify for a sponsorship in Sydney

Bob to help your readers out here is a profile of some of the suburbs.
Newtown
Newtown is probably the coolest suburb in Sydney. It is known for its outrageous citizens (check out Humans of Newtown), anything goes here. In fact the more outrageous the better no one will bat an eye. What binds the suburb together is the total lack of bogans (unfortunately due to the Kings Cross lockout this is changing). You will quite often stand at the lights with a transexual, gay couple with kids, gay couple with out kids, almost traditional family (apart from clothes), and beautiful young things. The bars are pretty friendly – lots of gay bars which dont mind straight people, everyone owns a dog and they rule. Cats are pretty popular as well – so are snakes, rats and parrots. Singles, families, couples, musos, artists all live together pretty harmoniously. The food culture is great and there are terrific cafes. If the suburb has a downside its parking, use the excellent public transport system and save yourself and the residents the headache. The Blue Moon Goth Festival (October ) is not to be missed. The police and the fire station have a sense of humour here. Yobs are not welcome.You can get anything in Newtown in fact there is no need to ever leave!
Ha ha, not so much a profile of ‘some of the suburbs’, more of a roundup of just one, Newtown.
That said, it’s a very interesting roundup Abbi, Newtown certainly sounds like an unusual and trendy place. I did have a quick look at that Humans of Newtown website, you certainly do have characters 🙂

This listing is incorrect. Newtown (where I live is classified as the inner west so are Annandale, Alexandria, Erskineville, Camperdown, Redfern, Glebe, Forest Lodge etc.
There are 3 ‘inner areas’ City and perimeter encompassing, Kings X, Darlinghurst, Surry Hills, Waterloo, East Sydney and Elizabeth Bay.
The inner west – Glebe, Annandale, Redfern, Camperdown, Chippendale, Darlinghurst, Newtown, Marrickville and Balmain. Suburbs like Concord, Croydon, Summer Hill, Drummoyne, Ashfield etc are technically in the inner west but dont really count as they are err suburbs…
The east encompasses everything east of the GPO and starts at Paddington it includes Rushcutters Bay, Edgecliffe, Vaucluse, Watsons Bay, Rose Bay, Double Bay ,Bondi, Maroubra(this is the end of it), Coogee, Dover Heights, Tamarama (aka Glamarama)
Moore Park, Zetland Kingsford etc are south and complete no wheres ville. As a basic guide the East is $$$$ and pretentious, the inner west is less pricey (but fast catching up) and known for its arty grunge.
The city is just sleezy and in parts dangerous (Waterloo the cross).

Thanks for your input, very much appreciated. It’s a headache, I know I spent hours and hours researching this information when I did it about four years ago.
Many of the suburbs you say are inner west are included in my list, but boy are the suburb layouts complicated in some cities, most especially Sydney and Melbourne.
Anybody reading this page should take into account that my listing is just a guide, so they may also want to read what you have had to say about it as well. At the end of the day though, I’m sure anybody deciding on a particular suburb would be sure to check exactly where it is on the map so they know where they are going.

I have lived in Kings Cross for 25 years.
I have never felt threatened.
If you go to the sleazy establishments (easily discerned) then you are looking for trouble, especially if you deliver gratuitous abuse to fellow patrons.
This suburb is 90 seconds by train from the heart of the city.
By bus you can easily reach splendid harbour beaches.
There is a plethora of restaurants and coffee houses, of all price ranges, from which to choose.
You can find plenty of ostentatiously arty types, if you like that sort of thing, but you would feel more at home in Newtown.
Also, if you are looking for self-righteous greenies, with whom you can moan about the Imminent End Of The World, you will find them much thicker on the ground in Newtown.
I went to Kings Cross specifically to look for those sleazy establishments, and I still never felt threatened.
Not sure I should have set that out loud, should I? 🙂
