The Five Day Weather Backcast for Brisbane

Today is the last day of winter here in Australia. I decided to provide you with a five-day weather backcast, because I find them far more accurate than weather forecasts.

Frankly, you’d need to be psychic to predict what happened here in the last five days.

Saturday

As I said in Mondays post, Saturday it poured down with rain all day. It was dull, grey and not very warm either.

Sunday

Sunday was a wonderful day, temperatures hit about 24°C and the skies were clear and blue, just how we like it. The evening and night were both markedly warmer than they have been in the few months before.

Monday

Monday, phew what a scorcher! 26°C, that’s almost 80°F for those still working in Roman numerals, and an obvious signal that winter was over and spring (more like summer) had begun.

A real beaut, as we would say here.

Now, as I’ve been here for nearly 4 years, I’ve built up a vast amount of experience on Australia’s climate. So I already knew by these events that, as always happens, winter becomes spring like flipping a switch here.

You might remember how quickly it changed towards the end of August 2009 when I wrote a post called The Australian Climate: El Nino and La Nina.

So on Monday I had already decided that today’s post was going to be called something like “At last! Glorious weather again.”

Nothing could go wrong, all the signs were there. I received these photographs from Julie, a regular reader and American expat living in the next suburb along from me…..

Carpet python

6 Foot Carpet pythonYes, a carpet snake in her back garden. A 6 footer by the looks. You know the good weather is here when the snakes start to wake up. I haven’t seen one since I had that snake in my house!

But then something happened to completely ruin my post and crush all my “flip the switch” theories. Something that made me throw my huge climatic knowledge in the bin.

Tuesday

Let’s return to Julie’s back garden for a view of the weather on Tuesday.

Hail

More Hail

hail on the balconyDrinks on the balcony anyone?

a pile of hailIt’s not snow, it wasn’t cold, but those hail stones were quite impressive.

No sign of that snake this time either, huh?

Wednesday

The day, again from Julie’s back garden, started like this….

Dawn
New dawnAnd (as seen from the front of my house) turned into this…..

TodayClear blue skies, 22°C.

We are back on track for spring again.

Talk about the weather!

My thanks to Julie for the photographs. Thanks Julie!

Has anyone thought that the snake could have been hidden UNDER the hail stones?

    • BobinOz April 1, 2014, 9:49 pm |

Well, he would have definitely been hiding somewhere.

Scorching 80* F?? Are you being sarcastic? Is this normal for Australia??

    • BobinOz April 1, 2014, 9:49 pm |

Yes Emily, it is quite normal, but this post is about the last day of winter, it’s not always that hot during winter, further south it would be much colder. I wasn’t being sarcastic, it was just a lovely day for the time of year.

    Hi Deborah

Yes, you’re right, Julie has sent me a ton of pictures and they’ve all been great!

Julie, sounds to me like you now have got yourself a pet carpet python, they can be very loyal you know.

Awwww….Deb….what a sweetheart. We have lots of shared memories of our time in Scotland. All good! Bob, I must confess, it recently occurred to me that I’ve been “chucking” (don’t you love that word) my dog’s left-over RAW MEAT (some new-fangled fad where you feed them raw meat) off of that “observation deck” in the back. It could be that Mr. Carpet Python enjoys a free, raw meal of chicken and what have you. So we humans sometimes encourage our adventures (even when we don’t realize it at the time). LOL!
