Australia Post vs Royal Mail

If you were to search Google for the “most famous postman in the world”, you would find more than one reference to Postman Pat.

postmanI just did it, well, it’s not a very sunny day here in Australia, and found the big nosed postman in positions 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8 and 10.

That’s pretty famous.

He has a famous song too, you know the one, “Postman Pat, Postman Pat, Postman Pat and his black and white cat……”

Well, like this, from England, about 20 odd years ago…..

Now, back here in Australia, Queensland to be precise. Not 20 odd years ago, but now. We might not have the most famous postman in the world, but we sure have got the strangest, and maybe the cutest.

Perhaps the name is not as catchy, but can’t have everything.  Please meet the strangest ‘postman’ in the world, Jackie…..

Hilariously, it seems a Postman Pat film is soon to be released. In it, Postman Pat enters a talent competition and battles evil cyborg postmen in a strange mix between Britain’s Got Talent and The Terminator.

(now that’s a film I’d love to see, and it’s good that the newly privatised Royal Mail is exploring different revenue streams 🙂 )

Hi BobinOz! I followed a link to this article from another of your articles in the hope that, as you compared the postal services here in Australia with those of your native Britain, you might comment on how Australia Post offices have become full-on retail stores, selling everything from printer paper, unlocked mobile phones, children’s books, gadgets, and other doodads. As a former resident (and still citizen) of the U.S. of A., I’m familiar with the postal services there, which lose more and more ground to email each year and need a bigger and bigger infusion of cash from the Federal government, and near-annual postal rate increases to keep (barely) functioning. The only things they sell in their post offices, besides stamps, are packaging materials for parcels and other postal-related items. At least, this is how it was when I left there in the summer of 2008, never to return (except to visit my daughters, who still live there).

I think this is one area where Australians have the Yanks all beat. By diversifying into retail, they’ve made post offices interesting places to visit, unlike the dank, sterile, and dull post offices of the U.S. Postal Service. The Yanks could take a page from the Aussies’ book in this particular case. Bravo, Australia Post!

Interesting point Mike but I think the reason I haven’t written about this is because many post offices in the UK are actually located in newsagents, grocery stores, sweet shops and all sorts of convenience stores, a bit lick here.

Think Seven Eleven type shops, that’s where there would be a post office counter in the UK. So for me, it’s no different here. Sounds like in the US they are still sticking to traditional post offices, as you suggest, it’s time they move on from that and diversify a bit.

      Cheers, Bob

Tried to FB post Australia Post vs Royal Mail, FB seems to think its offensive or spammy..

      Hi Vince

First, thanks for trying to spread the word on Facebook, it’s appreciated. I have had this happen to me before, and others have had it happen too. It is normally fixed by using a link shortening service like…

      http://www.shorturl.com/

Just go to that website, copy my long link and paste it into the create a shortURL area, then hit create. Whenever I have used a short link on Facebook there have been no problems. But with a long link they often say it’s offensive or spamming.

Me? Offensive or spamming? What are they thinking?

      Cheers!
