It’s around this time of the year I like to do my Australia vs England, winter vs summer weather comparison.
Traditionally, I go to Google and take a snapshot of the weather in London and Brisbane, then compare the two. I do it in July which is the middle of winter here and summer in England.
This tradition dates way way back to 2010 and you can see the results from that year in my post called My Traditional Winter Summer UK Oz Weather Comparison Post.
Now, as I was calling it a tradition last year, I’m pretty sure I did it in 2009. But I couldn’t find it, and as I am on holiday using the apartments Internet ‘connection’, which takes about 15 minutes to open a page, I gave up looking.
But before I gave up, I found this from 2009, Pictures of an Australian Winter. As you can see from those posts, Brisbane and Queensland winters are almost identical to London’s summers.
But this year, as I have just mentioned, I’m on holiday. So this year I have been reminded of how big Australia is and how different each state is.
First, London’s weather today….

Now the weather, also from today, in each of the major Australian cities…..
Again, Brisbane vs London, not much in it. This year, Brisbane beats London. But this year, I’m not in Brisbane, I’m in Hobart, Tasmania.
My little chart says 10°C, but I can tell you, it was 5°C here for most of the day. I haven’t been this cold since November 2007!
When I was last in England.
At first, and by that I mean on the first day, being cold was quite fun. Now, and it’s only day 3, being cold is just COLD!
Very COLD!

Come to Ohio for a vacation. Today it is near 100F. In the winter it can drop to
-20F. (I am not much good at Centigrade). We do have a lot to see and do on the North Coast – Cedar Point amusement park (roller coaster capital of the world), Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, professional baseball, hockey, real football & basketball and lots more. I’d love to come to OZ & NZ, but, money you know.
Sounds like a fun place, but if I come over that way for a holiday, I’ll choose when it’s nearly 100°F rather than -20°F 🙂
yep, not fibbing. have witnessed some real nasty events between islanders and vietnamese as a doorman. every ethnic and cultural group have their racists.

i worked in the western suburbs of sydney for a year doing door work and had a fair share of racist remarks thrown at me. the most racist group of people i had to deal with were from the islander countries, ie fiji, tonga, samoa. after a few beers their true colours really came out, sometimes to the point of violence.
once as a backpacker i got off a greyhound bus at tenant creek. a native local shouted ‘hey whitey, got a cigarette’? i just ignored him and his group. they really scared the european backpacker chicks though.
Nobody ever called me whitey. Anyway, I don’t smoke.
So, are you serious? I’m not doubting you, I just need to check.

Yes, racism has been mentioned in a few places on this blog, but I’ve never done a full post on it. Not sure I can really, because I’ve never experienced it.
In Northern tropical parts of Australia , winter may occur on a Wednesday , or in fact , any day of the week .
In Tasmania , Summer may occur on a Wednesday , or in fact , any day of the week 😉
Well, Tassie was cold, but nowhere near as cold as it gets in England during winter. I didn’t even have to buy a pair of gloves!
I can report that Canberra was cold on Monday and Tuesday, and we have had rain over the last few days in Melbourne, but still nowhere near as bad as the cold and rain in the UK, so i’m more than happy with my Ozzie winter.
I agree, I wouldn’t swap any Australian weather for what I used to get back in England. All I remember is grey drizzle
