Australia’s Tragic Weekend

by BobinOz on February 9, 2009

My most recent post was a light hearted comparison of the extremes of Australia’s and Britain’s weather. As I am sure everyone has heard, this weekend in Australia the extreme weather has turned to tragedy.

As I write this, many fires are still raging and the death toll continues to rise. It is now the worst disaster in Australia’s history. Previously, the worst bushfires were Ash Wednesday in 1983 and before that, Black Friday in 1939. This tragedy is almost certain to claim more lives than both of those put together.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said “Hell has visited the people of Victoria………This is of a level of horror that few of us anticipated.”

It’s been a very sad and tragic weekend here in Australia.
