Let’s start this week with a little lightheartedness, with a pinch of humiliation. Don’t worry, the humiliation will be mine.
I got an email from somebody called Emma last week, she wanted to know how much I really knew about the Land Down Under. She could see that I ran a website with loads and loads of information about living in Australia, so surely my head was full of Australian facts?
So instead of a normal brain with the usual information in it, like this…
Emma wanted to know if my brain was simply full of Australian stuff and wondered if I would take her Austrivia test. So I did. Here’s my score…
10 would have been a pretty good score if there had only been 10 questions, but there weren’t, there were 16. It was multiple-choice as well, so even somebody who only spoke Russian would have probably got four questions right.
As you can see in the report I got with my score, they say “…you’re not quite an Aussie expert yet.”
So the game is up for me; it seems I’ve been rumbled. If you want to take the test, and it does literally take just three minutes or so, click on the image below…
No cheating, no Googling and no phone a friend. Let us know your score in the comments below.
Excuses
Two of the questions I got wrong I think I should have done better with. The other four though, well, all I have to say to you is, good luck. Actually I think my score of 10 out of 16 was pretty good. See if you can beat it.
I did take the test a second time and I got all 16 right on that occasion.
Proving, if nothing else, that my memory is still sound. If I’d managed to have done that the first time though, instead of being told I was not quite an Aussie expert yet, I would have got “Bonza score, you’re practically a local!”
Which, of course, I am.
Hey there Bob…well this Canuck(Canadian) also got 10…like you said, some of these questions ARE trivia..I mean, I don’t mind questions relating to geography, history, etc. but who would be able to answer questions about Kylie Minogue (did I spell her name correctly?) leaving Neighbours? And the question on TV transmission, I guessed and luckily got it right!
Interesting quiz though…somehow I still feel like I could’ve done better..but I assure you, I didn’t cheat :-).
10, not a bad score for a Canuck. And yes, you did spell Kylie’s name correctly, but I’m afraid I can’t give you any extra points for that 🙂
By the way, I guessed a few answers as well myself, and got one of two of them right. Nothing wrong with that, some of my best work involves guessing.
Only 9 right here. I guess 6 weeks in Geelong does not make me a local yet.
Not bad Todd, I’ve been here eight years and only managed one more than you 🙂
Well 6 here :O .
Sounds like you could do with a very long holiday here WA, to give you a chance to brush up 🙂
Yeah Bob, I have been in NSW for a validation week recently and more to come , will hit the 16 at some point for sure :).
Yes, 16 is a lot easier to get when taking the test for a second time 🙂
Hi Bob,
Sorry to change the subject a little but saw this today
“An incredible video has captured the moment a huge five-metre-long snake swallowed a kangaroo whole just metres from a campsite in far north Queensland”
In the daily mail.
I thought this will give the Aussie joiners something to ponder as they fly to their new country
Apparently that was just a starter, his main course was going to be a dingo, he just had to catch it first.
Gotta love the Australian wildlife.
I thought you would like to know Pete that following your tipoff, I’ve decided that a large snake eating a kangaroo is exactly the sort of video those considering moving to Australia would really want to see.
So I’ve posted the video here.
Cheers, Bob
bob i only got 9 it must mean i need to come back again to your wonderful country (as a foot note today tuesday the population of oz has reached 24 million where is the main group originally from ?
Yes, you certainly do need to come back to brush up on your Kylie Minogue and your Vegemite.
I saw the population clock heading towards 24 million the other day, didn’t realise we got there yesterday. The original main group were already here, the aboriginals.
Then it was the convicts.
Hi Bob,
I surpised myself I got nine, didn’t guess any, honest!!
Well done, I didn’t guess any either. In particular, I didn’t guess the one about when TV first came to Australia 🙂
Hi Bob,
I also got a score of 10.
But it’s a trivia quiz so there’s no disgrace in not knowing these trivial facts, like the year that K Minogue left Neighbours.
Cheers,
Warwick
Yes, the Kylie question was one of the four I mentioned in the post, and as you say, it’s pure trivia. I would have been disappointed if I had known the answer.
Being as you are, I’m pretty sure, a born and bred Aussie Warwick, I think we can agree that 10 isn’t so bad.
Bob, you’re right – I’m a born and bred Aussie and I didn’t score any higher than you did.
You did extraordinarily well.
Cheers,
warwick
I think I will print your comment on a pretty piece of paper and turn it into a certificate of achievement to pin on my wall.
As you’ve probably guessed, I didn’t do great at school 🙂
