Who Moved to Australia? From What Country? To Which State?

A lot of questions in my title today, so what is it all about? Time for me to stop asking questions and start answering some.

Back in 2011 Australia held a census, as they do every five years. I took part in that census for the first time as I mentioned in my post Australian Census 2011 Results and Highlights.

That post included several very interesting facts from that census as well as a rather crude table detailing the top 10 countries of birth for our population that arrived from overseas.

Today I am thrilled and very privileged to update the information in its fullest with…

Interactive toolNow, you may be forgiven for thinking that the above image is some kind of modern art interpretation of a funnel web spider’s complex web, but it isn’t. It’s actually a quite amazing and very clever interactive tool from which you can discover all kinds of migrant information such as:

  • Most Zimbabweans move to Western Australia, closely followed by Queensland.
  • Top destination for South Africans, on the other hand, is New South Wales.
  • New South Wales is also the primary destination for those from England.
  • People from India though, prefer to go to Victoria.
  • Only 153 people born in Wales moved to hot and humid Northern Territory.
  • Whereas 633 Welsh people move to cool and crisp Tasmania.

And I’ve only touched the surface, find out who moved where from Japan, Afghanistan, Iran, Italy, Ireland, Netherlands, Egypt, USA, Canada, oh enough already, let’s just say from just about anywhere to anywhere.

Before you pop over to have a play with this interactive tool for yourself, you’ll notice that in the above image every one of those squares is placed randomly and incoherently in no place special.

When you see the tool for the first time, everything will be nice and tidy. It’s down to you to mess it up with your mouse. Simply hover and drag and you can isolate the exact information you are looking for.

Find out, for example, where everyone who moves from your country heads to when they get to Australia. Simply hover over each string after separating it from the crowd and find out exactly how many people move to each specific state in Australia from the country you come from.

Are you ready?

Yes, Australia is, indeed, A Nation of Immigrants.

Don’t forget to come back sometime after 2016, hopefully I’ll have some updated statistics for you.

Yes, it’s possible, it is not a requirement to use a MARA registered migration agent. If you are capable of doing it on your own, go for it.

What about the hungarians in Australia?

    • BobinOz May 4, 2015, 3:28 pm |

Yes, we have Hungarians here in Australia. Not sure how many, but I do know one of them personally.

Someone recently told me one could buy a permanent residency? Is that true? She said she knows someone who paid to bring her parents to get settled in Australia. She also said if one buys PR there is no pension or medicare.

I can’t find any such information, so probably just a rumour.

    thanks!

I think the person you heard this from would have been talking about the Contributory Parent visa by the sounds of it, but I can’t advise you about how it works or whether it would be possible for you to get one. You could speak to a MARA migration agent to find out how it works, or you can google it, I’m sure you will find a lot of information about it on the governments immi website.

      Good luck, Bob

    and Kazakhstan is also missing…

    • BobinOz September 15, 2014, 7:45 pm |

Quite a few countries are missing actually, I think there are something like 200 countries in the world and there’s only about 40 in the above chart. My coder got the information from the ABS, maybe that’s all he could get hold of.

It is interesting that I don’t see Russia on the list. Shall we be the only russians down under?!

    • BobinOz March 17, 2014, 7:37 pm |

Hmm, yes, that is very strange. I’m sure you would not be the only Russian here, but if you were, that would make you a pioneer 🙂
