Containerval Festival: Art, Crafts and Containers in Brisbane

It’s amazing what you can do with a container, isn’t it? I saw a programme about some doomsday preppers once and some guy had created a kind of modern-day castle using containers in the hope of keeping the riffraff out come the day of reckoning.

I’d only ever used a container once in the past, utilising a 40 footer for its traditional function of putting stuff in it and transporting it by cargo ship. You probably read about that in my post Moving to Australia: What to Bring With You.

On Sunday though, I used a container for the second time when I went shopping…

Containerval Festival, Brisbane

containerval festivalThe thing is, what with Mrs Bob having a broken leg, we don’t like to venture out too far at the weekends these days. So when we heard about Containerval Festival in Brisbane over the weekend, it sounded ideal.

And it was, each of the containers had a rather convenient ramp for ease of access for Mrs Bob and the wheelchair…

In their own words, it is “Brisbane’s newest festival and will celebrate the city’s creativity from 2 – 17 November 2013.” Here’s what’s on…

What's onWith impeccably bad timing we turned up on Sunday at around 2 o’clock in the afternoon, when absolutely nothing was on. If we had have been earlier, we could have taken part in Tai Chi by Academy of Tai Chi + Qigong. If we had turned up later, we could have enjoyed Jugglers Art Space Inc. presents: Cynthia Howard & Jasper Foley (Theatre).

Instead, Mrs Bob bought a pair of earrings from one of the art and craft containers, they are a Christmas present for… well, I can’t say, that would spoil things, wouldn’t it.

We did also enjoy some of that creativity promised in the events tagline; for example this container invited us to Please Come In!

Please come inSo we did…

You are in…and discovered a small cinema in a container. Yes, that is a bear you can see on screen.

Then there was aboriginal art on show in Nomad Palace…

musicI like the look and feel of Containerval Festival, I’d like to see it grow and become a regular feature on the Brisbane calendar. I’d probably like to return when there are fewer storm clouds about and after the music has kicked off.

Next weekend though appears to be more about film with Brisbane International Film Festival, surely you remember Brisbane’s Biff in the Burbs, putting on a few shows.

Not everything was in a container though; bucking the trend on that department was The Curious Caravan…
