So that was Christmas and the New Year, how was it for you?
Here’s how it was for us:
We spent Christmas Day and Boxing Day round friends along with more friends. In total I think there were 13 adults (15 at one point) and, give or take one or two, about the same number of children.
On Christmas Day, before dinner was served, the kids enjoyed a bit of time in the pool…
Well, it was about 34°C. After dinner, the kids and some adults enjoyed some more time in the pool…
Ditto Boxing Day.
On New Year’s Eve a similar sized crowd of us went down to our local sports club for the 6 PM to 9 PM kids disco. The kids enjoyed the disco while we sat on the open deck outside and drank a few beers, before getting the courtesy bus back home to my house.
We saw the New Year in sitting in my back garden drinking our beers and wines whilst the kids and the dog went for, literally, a midnight swim. This particular photo was taken at 13 minutes past midnight to be precise…
So, as you can see, Christmas and New Year here in Australia are probably quite a bit different from how it is in whichever country you live in.
Anyway, it’s January 2 now, it’s all over for another year and life returns to normal. And what are the kids doing?

Hey! Just wanted to tell you that the best Christmas I’ve ever had was at the beach with a group of friends and family playing beach cricket. Or water skiing with everyone 😀

Yes, we went to the beach on Boxing Day the second year we were here in Australia, great fun! Beats sitting around watching telly, playing board games and drinking. It’s a totally different Christmas.

I’ve been visiting your site for close to two years now. I love looking at the pictures of different places in Australia and imagining my family and I vacationing there. For the past few months I started looking at Australia as a place to live rather than a place to visit. We’re very dissatisfied with the economy here (small town Texas), as well as politics in general. I dread the upcoming reforms in health care, the hesitance to tackle the problem of illegal aliens, and the idea of the majority not being able to sway change because the minority may be offended. (I am not speaking not only of race, but also gender, religion, philosophy and ideal when I mention minority… society is fractured and quality of life is declining for the middle class… of course, this is my opinion only). I value your website for the introduction to a different, better way of life. I sincerely hope I am successful in moving my family to Australia. It seems like a wonderful place to transplant my family.

It’s good to hear you have been enjoying my website and I too hope you are successful in moving to Australia. I can’t properly comment on the situation in the USA at the moment, but I have heard the same stories of dissatisfaction from many others. Tell you what though, I can’t guarantee you our politicians are any better than yours 🙂 I wouldn’t trust ours as far as I could throw a piano!

I live in Adelaide have done for 2.5 years now, just built a house, but we find it boring here
Got any advise we are thinking about heading upto Brisbane liked the idea of being able to go to the g coast ect.. Adelaide is lovely but not sure what’s missing ;(
Just don’t think it’s quite cutting the mustard with regards to living the dream!!
Originally from the jersey Channel Islands moved to Spain for 18months Dubai for 2.5 years Adelaide 2.5years .. Hubby works in a bank I’ve just got a cracking part time job got 3 kids 15,5,3. Wondering if I move will it be worth it ?

That’s probably the most common complaint about Adelaide, just not much going on. I loved the place when I visited but I know plenty of people who live there that hate it when others say there’s not much to do. But still a lot of people say it.
So yes, I think Brisbane would offer you more, the city itself is busier, there is more going on and you do have easy access to both the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast. Do remember though that you won’t have a local beach to go to, east side of Brisbane is pretty much all mangrove. I suspect that’s why they built the lagoon (which is very nice) in the city.
Why not pop up by plane for a mini visit and take a look around? Good luck whatever you decide to do.
