A Typical “Australian Lifestyle” Weekend

Some weekends can work out to be surprisingly simple, extremely entertaining and astonishingly cheap. This weekend was a great example of that.

As with most weekends, it started on Friday evening at around six o’clock. My Aussie mate Pete came round and we popped down to the Sports & Rec for a couple of early evening beers. A couple became four schooners, but luckily Pete was drinking mids so he passed the breathalyser that he had to take the minute we pulled out of the car park. I did say they were hot here on drink driving around here, didn’t I?

Cost of four beers, $24.

Saturday was a pottering around not doing much day until about 4:30 p.m., when we jumped in the car and headed off to our friend Ian’s house for a party. I’m not really sure whether you would call it a party, or just a gathering of friends.

But whatever you call it, it’s what we do around here when the nearest pub (Sports & rec tries but isn’t one) is a 15 minute drive. Either way around a dozen adults and a whole bunch of children had a great evening.

Cost for our “bring a bottle’ beers and wine, around $20.

The kids are hiding.

Sunday lunchtime the BobinOz family and the Beninoz family went for a barbecue over at and Anstead Bushlands. The kids played hide and seek and then we ate steak, snags, fried eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms, and potatoes all washed down with a glass of wine and a couple of cans of beer.

Cost of all food and drink for two families, $40.

After that, we decided to take a drive up Mount Coot-tha. Free to park and stunning views of the city and surrounds.

Cost of ice creams, $12.50.

And to round off a perfect weekend, the football season has started again. When everyone else was in bed, I watched Premier League Football on Foxtel. Tottenham beat Liverpool two goals to one.

Cost: priceless!

Is living in Australia as comfortable as it is living in the U.K.? Lifestyle wise, money wise, modernness of the homes and technology wise?

Yes, we have electricity, internet, flushing toilets, traffic lights, higher than average wages and, in my opinion, a much better lifestyle than that of the UK. We are a proper country, we even have tarmac on the vast majority of our roads these days 🙂

Yes, beating Liverpool is always a special treat. Here’s to the next season. I suspect you are quite excited, what with your new manager. Should be a cracking season.

    Bob,
Your info again, is dead on. Just wondering is this your job,? I would be coming from the good ole USA…. I m sure the lifestyle is what I am yearning for…
    Kind Regards,
    Lisa

Well, yes, sort of, but it’s not the only ‘job’ that I do. I do other things as well. I am not a jack of all trades, but I am definitely a master of none. 🙂

    Bob,
We are moving to Brisbane in August 2014, and I am in the process of exploring schools for my 11 year old and 9 year old. Can you or anyone offer any feedback on either of these schools or schools in the camphill/hawthorn areas or suggest other areas that come recommended for good schooling in Brisbane,
    Many thanks,
    Karen F.

Ooops, forgot to include the schools That have interested me so far are camphill juniors (for the 9 yr old) and Brisbane High school for my 11 yr old.

I don’t have any personal experience with either of these schools Karen, hopefully somebody else may be able to help further. But if you mean Brisbane State High School my wife tells me that it is consistently one of the top two schools in all of Queensland.

You can find lots of information about schools on my page called Which school?

        Good luck, Bob
